DESIGN NAME: Lost Species
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Education Illustrations
INSPIRATION: To educate about the extinction history and to promote the idea of sustainability among the general public, with emphases that extinction can be reversed, and to raise awareness of positive and negative human in uences on Nature. They are a part of the LazarusEffect campaign.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The three information graphics serve as a basis
to introduce the topic of the Lazarus-Effect. They include The Six Major Mass Extinctions, Death Watch of the Species, as well as an information graphic of the local Fern Plants and Flowering Plants (based on the Rote Liste, 2018).
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The information graphics have been developed to accompany and introduce the Lazarus Effect campaign.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project startet in may 2020

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research with anthropological, biological and paleontological literature, as well as support of various natural history museums.
The design is rich in detail. They are drawn as vector graphics in black and white and thus fits in well with most of the musee's scenographic installations.
The graphics are structured in such a way that the viewer can discover more and more. All thre infographics are in a large-format and understandable for everyone. The Topics are compressed and build on on each other.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part was it to visually compress the complex topic informations of extinction from the anthropological, biological and paleontological side into an understandable graphic. The infographics are a part of the Lazarus Effect-Campaign, special attention is paid to the complementary interaction.
The subject deals with the death and (mass) extinction. The black and white style in detail and the rich contrasted illustrations are the best way of visualization and communication for this serious topic.

I am so impressed by this design! The colours and composition of the illustration combine to create a powerful message about the impact of human activity on our environment and the precious species that are under threat. The illustrative style has been used to great effect in depicting a sense of urgency and sorrow, making this a powerful piece of design. Lost Species is an inspiring work of art that showcases an excellent example of Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design. It captures the complexity of the topic of extinction in a visually captivating manner, with a structure that allows the viewer to uncover more and more information. This incredible work is a truly inspiring example of how design can be used to educate, spread awareness and promote sustainability. I am so inspired by Lara Wilkin's work, Lost Species. Their design is so aesthetically pleasing, structured in a way that can be easily understood, and full of detail. It is truly amazing how they were able to capture the complexity of the Lazarus-Effect in three simple graphics. The research that was conducted in order to make this project possible is also quite impressive. It is clear that a lot of dedication and effort has been put into this work.
