DESIGN NAME: Adesse
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Watch
INSPIRATION: In today’s world, we are exposed to many different types of stimuli that often easily distract us from appreciating and truly enjoying the present moment. The minimalist approach to become present, is to remove the unnecessary. Adesse reimagines the traditional analog watch with minimalist principles, and questions what is absolutely necessary to tell the time. Do we really need to see the numerical indicators? A second hand? A minute hand? hour hand?
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Adesse watch design concept reimagines the traditional analog watch with minimalist principles. It takes minimalism to the extreme by omitting the superfluous and questioning what is absolutely necessary to tell the time. Designed through subtraction, traditional watch features are removed. A sculptural rotating piece is carved out. The watch deliberately only reveals just enough to tell the time at any one moment, acting as a memento to live in the present moment. Please see PDF attached.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Adesse reads like a one-hand watch. From a bird’s eye view, one can only see the hour markers, as they are scored deeper, wider, and taller than the quarter markers in the case interior. It is only from a side-on view that the quarter markings (15min, 30min, 45min) between each hour are revealed. As time progresses throughout the day, most of the quarter markers become hidden by the rotating sculptural face. The only quarter markers that are fully revealed are the ones that are relevant to that hour acting as a memento to enjoy the present.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Designed in Sydney Australia. Exhibited in Singapore 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A special watch movement is required to be strong enough to rotate the sculptural piece and also to relocate the crown to the bottom of the watch. Allowing a perfect circular silhouette watch case.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research conducted consistent of looking for various minimalist watches and non-standard watches which had rotating disc as watch hands. Through this research and collaboration with watch manufacturers, we were able to find what was technically possible for the watch.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to see how traditional watch features could be removed and still tell the time. The design process was guided by the minimalist principle "Design through subtractions". The form of the watch was created exclusively by carving/subtracting. Ensuring the legibility of the watch was also a challenge. This was overcome by a delicate balance between manipulation of the form and materials.
