DESIGN NAME: Katipo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Foldable Gas Stove
INSPIRATION: The product's name is due to the resemblance of the stove to the shape of Katipo spider.
The katipo (night stinger) is one of many species of the genus Latrodectus, such as the Australian redback spider which is common in New Zealand and got its name from the native tribes (Maori).
Due to the spider's small size, the stove was designed as well. Moreover, the model was inspired by the katipo's color and proportions.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Katipo is a hand-sized foldable outdoor gas stove.
It folds into 50 mm width and 120 mm length and has an open range of 180 DIA .
Each leg has a cutting edge that stops its motion by a stopper pin and opens to the angle of 120 degrees and thus produces an equal opening to them all perfectly.
the design reflect the intentions to upgrade camping stoves to the highest level possible of style and appearance
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: when the stove is closed on folding position, rotate the middle and the lower leg counterclockwise. the middle leg will stop after rotating 120 degrees by the stopper pin. keep turning the lower leg until it stops too. place katipo in the open position on the ground, connect it by screwing it to the gas canister. the operation of using the gas stove is very simple and logical to the user
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2019 as a part of a metal exercise in my bachelor's degree - industrial design studies at HIT Israel. The project ended in March 2020.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I wanted to create camping gas stove that will be functional and large enough to hold a cooking pot but small enough not to take up too much space for storage as well. All this together with the creation of clean minimal aesthetic lines. I've observed and researched at different types of gas stoves and collapsible products, making a morphological study of different types of spiders following the gas stove research - which lead to the Katipo spider. Adjusting it into production and testing several and different type of forms. Hours of prototypes making till to working model.
CHALLENGE: Maximize the functionality of the stove by keeping the value of the design like the openings holes in the tubes connecting the control valve to the burner allow air to mix with the propane by using the venturi effect. How to adjust the structure when the stove are closed and will be as flat as it can and complete each other shape, and by the time achieving a symmetrical structure when open with high stability to hold a cooking pot. Stopping the legs movement when opening in 120 degree each. Heat resistant materials and color to guarantee superior look and quality.
