DESIGN NAME: X Streams
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Door Handle
INSPIRATION: The designer drew inspiration from nature. Why was wood, one of the most comforting materials to touch, overlooked as a material of choice when it came to creating a door handle? If doors themselves are made from wood, why do people often turn to colder material such as metals for their handles? The designer was convinced that there must be a way to make this versatile and sustainable material a work of art. These very thoughts led the designer on the quest of making a unique wooden door handle
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The X Streams door handles are different to other conventional handles in terms of material choice and finish.
By choosing reclaimed wood, and using the process of fractal burning to create the illustration of river streams, the designers process offers each piece an individuality that can not be replicated because the electric current chooses where the rivers in the design will flow.
The smooth curve between the handles grip and the neck, feel pleasant to touch yet robust enough to perform its function. This additional nonlinear element elevates the overall shape of the handle.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Primary use of this handle is opening new spaces, however its distinguished finish, which attracts attention, plays an important part in integration of the entire environment around.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The whole project from an idea in December 2019 to fully functional developed product in December 2020 was created in Telford UK.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Two pieces of wood are required to be joined to ensure durability. The veins created by the process of fractal burning creates the illusion of river streams. The veins are filled with either a colored epoxy resin, or infused with a metal leaf such as gold or silver. They are finally covered with crystal clear epoxy resin to create the ultimate finish.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Passionate about sustainability, the designer chose to use reclaimed wood from historic buildings as the raw material for his creations. Two pieces of wood were required to create one door handle to ensure the handle could endure daily use. Illustration of river streams running through the design infused by luxury metals, such as gold and silver, into his design creates three dimensional effect and kept the nature theme of the project.
CHALLENGE: This project faced two key challenges. One, to ensure the handle was fit for purpose in terms of comfort and durability. Secondly, executing the process of fractal burning in a safe manner whilst dealing with the added complexity of creating a three dimensional visual effect.
