DESIGN NAME: Annual Rings
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: The design team adopts lots of wood elements in the house. These wood elements are his father’s collections over the years, and his reluctance to the objects. Thus, he reserves them for extensive use. The concept of the annual ring is a great starting point for the project. When trees form new cells, arranged in concentric circles each year, it presents the meaning of the longer time at home. Life stores time in space, but time flows everywhere in space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A concept of "annual rings" runs through the entire space. The annual rings are proof of the time when the trees grow. Thus, the design team brings this concept to the living space. A home is a place where members can record the good times at every moment in. The design team creates overlapping atmosphere of each members in the space as a starting point. The clients can see the annual ring laminate design of the ceiling in public spheres such as the living room and kitchen area.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In the public sphere, a four-layer irregular annual ring design is adopted on the ceilings of the living room and kitchen. They utilize lamps that have the shape of tree roots. The columns which connect the ceiling and the floor are drifting old cypress. The log multi-function table is adopted, presenting the image of wedding rings. Moreover, they apply the grindstone method, which is resistant to moisture and humidity and adds a retro feeling. Time and space echo from the ceiling to the floor and from top to bottom.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in July 2018 in Yuanli Township, Miaoli County.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: A drifting old cypress is adopted at the corner of the elevator. The cypress above the door is the image of a birds nest, being consistent with the concept of home. Instead of using pesticides to eliminate insects, the design team adopts an eco-friendly method of using heat to eliminate pests. The wall behind the sofa was originally intended to be painted with piano bakes lacquer. However, the design team takes into account the vulnerable use of acrylic, and it isnt friendly to the environment.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As a living environment, a home should be a place where memories of members are recorded at every moment, including birth, aging, sickness, and death. This feature is similar to annual rings. The annual rings record time, depict time and compose daily life. Therefore, the ceiling is designed as annual rings that circle round and round. In the space, clients can feel the passing of time, so they will always remember to grasp every minute and every second of getting along with their family.
CHALLENGE: In order not to hinder the whole aesthetic perception in the design of the annual ring of the ceiling, the team takes into account the aspect of the annual ring from all angles, the placement of lighting and air conditioning wiring. In short, the lighting should be placed sophisticatedly and the pipeline should be hidden. In addition, the wood used in the space is the waste material collected in ordinary days, so the usable parts become fragmented. The difficulties are that how to make the best use of the materials, which will test their creativity such as adding a terrazzo floor to achieve the results of recycling.
