DESIGN NAME: WTHN
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Side Table
INSPIRATION: Influenced by the Light & Space movement in California, it was about keeping the form simple, yet playing with different hues and saturation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: WTHN is a side table collection that pushes the limits of what a single material can achieve through the impact of the environment on a design. Because of its faceted design in conjunction with the material, it allows for a strong single colour to show per side, and each side shines different colours, yet they are all made of the same material.
The pieces illuminate your environment with colours, transforming your space throughout the day.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Each piece can be combined with the others to create a limitless configuration, just the way you want to arrange them.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2020 in Los Angeles and finished in June 2020.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Not many materials can show different colours quite like that of dichroic. As I was researching many Light & Space artists from California, I was highly intrigued by how they used this idea of “ambiguity” to create an art piece. It made the person question how the piece was working and made one think. I looked at different ways to bring this “magical” moment into an everyday yet very personal object, a side table.
CHALLENGE: Although the material, dichroic finishes, have been used by many designers, I wanted to find a unique way to use it, pushing its limits around what a single material can achieve. After endless experiments of trying and seeing what this material can do, a perfect design was realized, making each side of the panel produce DIFFERENT colour, as if they were an all different coloured film.
