DESIGN NAME: Golden Eagle G Nanjing
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Business Hotel
INSPIRATION: Golden Eagle G Hotel Nanjing is located in the world’s highest three-tower building. The owner expected a top-class luxury hotel in line with the level of the landmark to present the fashion and vitality of Nanjing. Based on the requirement, the designer defines “trend” as the establishment of common cultural cognition beyond sensory stimulation. From the city’s history, the Qinhuai Culture, which matches the brand’s spirit, is extracted for the creation of a new ethnic yet stylish hotel.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Qinhuai River, an epitome of the history and culture of Nanjing, is extracted as the design theme. Ancient Chinese scholars’ stories that ever happened along the riverside are translated into decoration elements via modern design approaches so that the glamour of history collides yet mixes with today’s fashion and vitality in the space. In this way, a unique living experience with a taste of both elegance and vogue is delivered to guests to redefine top-class luxurious and trendy lifestyle.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Cultural elements related to the river, such as ancient city gate, city wall and Yuhua Stone, are integrated into the space by modern materials like metal, stone and glass, which transform the profoundness of history into fashion and lightness and fill the space with a sense of future. Being a place where the past meets the future, the hotel utilizes space to remind guests of old times and provides them with a possibility of exploring new lifestyle.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: From the perspectives of nature and people, we conducted thorough research into the regional culture of Nanjing by literature searching and field investigations. As the capital of six dynasties, Nanjing has long history and splendid cultures. Among them, we carefully selected Qinhuai, the river that has nurtured the city and witnessed its development, as the origin of design, making the hotel a carrier of culture that reproduces the extremely luxury lifestyle once staged along the riverside.
CHALLENGE: Traditional Chinese culture emphasizes stability, etiquette and moderation, whereas a fashion brand aims to break rules, set a style and draw attention. To create an ethnic yet stylish hotel, the top priority is to blend the cultures that seem contradictory.
The pain point of design was the floor where the three towers are connected. Its large area and long flow lines will lead to poor experience if space arrangement fails to distract guests. Moreover, the central area is darker due to lack of natural light. To solve these problems, we build an artistic bar at the atrium to attract guests’ attention and ease their feeling of boredom. The bar also serves as a transport hub to other spaces.
