| DESIGN NAME: Grand Children Palace PRIMARY FUNCTION: Learning Center INSPIRATION: We took the Grand Palais as the reference for early learning center design, because the Grand Palais has a spacious open space, housing various artistic events of Paris. What if we could give the early learning center much more space for future events and playground? The idea would save budget for clients, better business plan for propaganda, better place for hosting events and more ideal way for teaching and playing. In the end, we keep a big comfortable space in the middle of the center. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Grand Children Palace, an early learning center, helps children get off to the best possible start and develop various skills while enjoying different monthly programs. The cross-shape open space in the middle of the center provided more possibilities for teacher and external organization to hold events and classes. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design of this learning center allows the students to interact in the building with freedom and creativity. Unlike traditional learning centers, the activity spaces and the central open scape are interconnected, obstacles such as doors and walls are minimized, the connection between spaces generate a sense of transparency. This encourages inhabitants, whether students or teachers, to interact with the functions of spaces and each other more frequently. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in April 2018, and finished in August 2018 in Guangzhou, China. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Main materials: eco emulsion paint, wood veneer, oak floor and ceramic tiles. This project has deatails which are special designed for children's safety and comfort. Small holes are created throughout the space to encourage children to explore and play. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Netarea is 680 square meters. It's a renovation project which was transformed into a educational space from an old factory space. TAGS: children, early education, open space, pure RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In Southern China, most of early learning centers only have separate classrooms for children to learn and play. But usually this kind of classroom is small and it would have a restriction on children and parents while playing and studying. And clients want this early learning centers to be a place for children to feel free without too much limitation. In the end, we design an open space to meet the wish of client without using the traditional space planing. CHALLENGE: We removed part of the factories ceiling due to its poor conditions, which lead to two unexpected gaps between the brick wall and the arc rooftop that exposed the exterior facade. On top of that, the fire protection of the factory did not satisfy the requirements of a facility for educational purposes. As result, we managed to reconstruct the ceiling and fulfill the fire protection requirements, under very limited budget. NAME: Royin Studio PROFILE: Royin Studio is a design lab specially in interior design, architecture design, furniture design and design strategy. We gather talented designers, highly-skilled technicians and problem solvers from all disciplines for a reason to make unique designs. With profound passion and tenacious endeavors, the studio always employs both original and unconventional concepts to practices of space, object and art. Royin Studio was founded by Roy Yin officially in China in 2017. For more than three years’ practice, the studio has completed more than 20 interior projects in 9 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Nanjing etc. In China, most built projects are designed with limited time in order to meet the high-speed development. Without exception, our projects are also in face of the same situation that requires less construction time and less cost. Therefore, each time we design a new project, we firstly check out of which could be preserved and demolished on site. In such condition, we are still seeking new experience coming from the extreme situation or extreme way of thinking for the sake of a difference in the world of spatial design. We believe constraints are the best way to innovation. Recently, Royin Studio founded Regular Concept, a new brand to meet the criteria of rapid development of China, aiming to use modular design and replicable concept to refine a better environment in future. Royin Studio will keep focusing on unique design and academic research, at the same time Regular Concept will be more into practice and design trend. |
