DESIGN NAME: N-Mask
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tissue Face Mask
INSPIRATION: The project was created as a fast solution for disposable safety equipment, printable on 3D printers. The project was further developed to its current form, for industrial production. In the coronavirus crisis, I noted that the biggest problem our country was facing was the dependance on supplies of protective equipment from abroad. Later it turned out that N-mask is mainly about comfortable wearing and ease of use.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: By wearing face masks, you protect your surroundings. The best solution is to use disposable face masks, e.g. surgical face masks. In the time of the corona crisis, there is a problem with the limited availability of these protective aids. The N-mask frames are designed so you can attach any filter material, and in case of lack of filter materials, you can use available paper handkerchiefs. Unlike common face masks, N-mask does not have to be washed, it is much more comfortable, it is easy and fast to put on and take off and has better filtration effenciency than a textile face mask.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Firstly the user simply fixes the filtration tissue or more advanced filtration material into the N-mask's clamps. From then on, use of the product is fully analogical with use of glasses - easy to put on and off without direct contact with the filtration material.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2019 in Most (Czech Republic) and finished in April 2019 in Most (Czech Republic)

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: N-mask can be both 3D printed and mass produced by injection molding. Most suitable material is PP (polypropylen) with many modifications.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: When in folded state, the product is 135 mm wide, 190 mm long, and 8 mm high for easier distribution and storage. In unfolded state, it is 80 mm high.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Once the idea started, deeper understanding of the capabilities of know face protection methods was need in order to provide comparison in the efficiency of filtration by different materials and face protection designs. Since the target product to replace was the most common surgical mask, which was the most sought after, but least available product, we focused the research on filtration capabilities of a simple tissue, quite surprisingly discovering it is performing better then a fabric filter insert. Laboratory testing methods of escaping droplets count were used.
CHALLENGE: The original idea of the product design was born very quickly, however fine tuning the design to cover both functional and aesthetic aspects was the real challenge. Our effort was to make a product with design qualities similar to fashionable glasses, since the actual wearing time throught the day could be extremely long.
