DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Remaking Urban Artifacts

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Pocket Spaces for Public Activities

INSPIRATION:
Pocket space happens to be a spatial typology that can also be found in nearby rural area, which is called “pavilion of wind&rain”. Villagers love to gather here at the neck of the alley, exchanging tabloids, playing with caged birds, or watching chess play. This experience of living environment is the exact “genius loci” that needs to be reclaimed. By marriage with public art, pocket spaces are transformed into contemporary urban "pavilion of wind&rain".

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Pocket space lies where an alley meets a street. Messy and trivial, yet it matters to those who live here. With limited budget, the very concept of "pavilion of wind&rain" is reintroduced into pocket spaces by marriage with public art to revitalize the streetscape and retain the historic urban fabric. The vernacular cultural symbols are reinterpreted and transformed by an abstract language, inspiring nostalgia as well as making these spaces small open-air art galleries.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The designer played a role that combines planner and artist in the urban design project, which is not often seen in the discipline of planning.
