The Taste of Music

INSPIRATION:
Images in the book are mostly edited in very different tones from the originals. The purpose is to get rid of the food’s own color because the colors and the appearance are not supposed to be the main characteristics when using music to improve the taste of food. Hence, I collages the images and edited the color just to bring out different ways of seeing foods.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Humanity has always tried to elevate every experience we could have, from music, to film, to art, among other things. It is not surprising that sound-enhanced food could be the new elevation we seek for our food experiences. The research has expanded the area of sensory applications of food and found that certain tones make things taste sweeter or more bitter. For instance, low brass sounds induce bitterness, while high-pitched tones, such as that of a bright piano can make food seemingly sweeter. So this book is talking about how does the theory work and what's scientific reasons behind.

Started February 2017, in San Francisco, and finished in May 2017

The book is done with perfect binding, Epson paper stock. Software: Adobe Creative Clouds

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The process requires a lot of experiments, such as taking many close-up images, bending and manipulating the real food. At the same time, I was debating if I should use any realistic image since the topic is music-related with very heavy scientific content. So eventually, I decided it shouldn't be either. The images and colors have influenced our perspective in so many ways, and the visuals in this book should be very experimental and challenging people's ordinary understanding.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge for this book is how to translate something abstract to something you can understand visually. Because the best experience of sonic-enhanced food should be eating food and listen to music that could potentially amplify the taste, but how to express the whole theory with any of these two elements on the side, this is the hardest challenging I had during the process.
