| DESIGN NAME: Whirlpool Bloomwash Pro PRIMARY FUNCTION: Washing Machine INSPIRATION: To push the boundaries of current production capability & viability and create an iconic, next generation Washing machine. Explore & utilise every material & process involved to their full potential & set a benchmark of Aesthetics & craftsmanship. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a highly differenciated product, aesthetically & featurewise. This product embodies the 'less is more' philosophy. Despite being minimalistic & subtle it is still made endearing by its intutive design aproach. It is first in the market to offer features such as hydraulic soft closing lid, 3d Lint filter with a trifolded filter area & 360 Spray nozzles These features work to solve the inherent problems of a top loading washing machine to give the best wash performance in its class. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It is a fully automatic machine & it requires permanent plumbing . The Machine is installed by a technician. The machine's user interaction is a simple linear process comprising of preset programmes and a screen displaying the cycle name and time needed. Suitable wash programme can be sellected with a toggle button from the programme list. The preset programmes can be adjusted as well using dedicated buttons for each part & specification of the wash cycle. End of the wash cycle is indicated by a sound alarm. Each program utilises optimum combinations of features like the heater & 360 spray during wash and rinse cycles. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Gurgaon in Q1 2018 and the product was launched a year and a half later. design work was done at the India head office where the India design studio is situated. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The lid comprises of a large edge to edge glass. The glass has an offset tapered frame underneath to give tactile volume & a floating effect. A non-conventional approach of using adhesive was employed to achieve a visually frameless execution. The chrome plated touchpoint has a concave surface which enhances reflections & adds tactile surprise. A combination of miniature snaps & screws is used to secure the chrome part on the edge of the underframe. A curved control panel is used to visually integrate the control panel into the wave of the floating top. The simplicity of the design demanded a lot of problem solving of detail & assembly. Effort was devoted to reimagining & reducing the assembly details to achieve the seamlessness and purity of design. Once we had the best expression of these values, Hi-Fidelity design prototypes were made & tested for user preference alongside the competition machines from the market. Once the aesthetics of the design is locked down and the production feasibility is achieved, a production batch is made after tooling & test pieces are installed pan-India to see the working of the product in a wide spectrum of physical & use conditions. CHALLENGE: Executing the minimal design posed many challanges to existing capablities. There was a steep learning curve for the team involved. Success was achieved by parallel cowork with all the stakeholders and careful premeditated design decisions. Cost effeciency was achieved by leveraging components from other Whirlpool products. This was the core challange as the new design was radically different from the current machines whose parts were used in this design.
