DESIGN NAME: Haconn Radiator Thermostat
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Automatically Regulates Room Temperature
INSPIRATION: This is a pemium radiator thermostat knob. Yep. And a beautiful one. One you want to put into your beautiful homes and apartments. Most of the time, these knobs are cheap looking products. Why put a cheap looking products on devices with premium look and price . We wanted to create a gorgeous looking thermostat knob with a lot of finishing and color options to match your taste and interior at a very competitive price. The ergonomics were also an important part of the process.
We wanted to create a product with a very easy learning curve. If the knob is up, temperature is also, if it is facing down, temperature will be low. The semantics of the product needs to be clear. Using it without thinking and without a learning curve.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We wanted to create a gorgeous looking thermostat knob with a lot of finishing and color options to match your taste and interior at a very competitive price. We have a lot of options in finishing and color without the big investment. We made a smart production and assembly setup, so it is easy to change and configurate different looking products.
We wanted to create a product were you do not have to look at the number scale labelled on the product but instead the product telling you. If the knob is up, temperature is also, if it is facing down, temperature will also be low. The semantics of the product needs to be clear. Using it without thinking and without a learning curve.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The standard product in the market is a variation of a cilinder where the labeled scale tells you what temperature you will be getting in the room. But most of the time, the label is not very distinct. We wanted to create a product were you do not have to look at the number scale labelled on the product but the semantics of the product is telling you were it is at. This is also a variation of a geometric cilinder but with a distinct bump on the front. Not only is this very good for ergonomics, it is a very visual reference to the temperature in the room. If the knob is up, temperature is also, if it is facing down, temperature will also be low. The semantics of the product needs to be clear. Using it without thinking and without a learning curve.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in Antwerp in januari 2019 and design process was finished end of 2019. Start of 2020 production of the product has started and is ongoing. Product will be presented in differtent fairs in late 2020.

Outside parts are injection moulded abs material in combination with cold pressed metal parts.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We used our Studio methodology of product design. We start with the empathy fase, where we research the market and target audience. Resulting in a designbrief and timeline. After that we have ideation and a lot of digital sketching concepts to explore all the possible options. In consultation with the client we choose a concept and direction for 3D modelling and detailing. During this phase there is a lot of testing and prototyping to see what works and what not and what they prefer and what not. Last fase is the translation and detailing for injection moulding and strength analysis.
CHALLENGE: The client wanted a clean geometric design that was very attractive for most modern interiors. we wanted more, we wanted to have an ergonomic design with a shape that was very semantic.. And an distinctive shape that was very geometric and clean but also a style and language that was different enough with all products on the market.
We also wanted to be commercial successful by adding a customizable feature in the product, which enables the user to choose color and finish material. But also enables Haconn to elaborate a very good offering with multiple options, combined with premium finish and materials, without having the usual big investment and stock you would normally need for such a kind of complex product setup.
