| DESIGN NAME: Canopy by Hilton PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel INSPIRATION: The design inspiration of all the canopy by Hilton hotels comes from the local culture where each hotel is located. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The canopy Chengdu City Center is located at the Tianfu Square. It takes inspiration from local elements used throughout the hotel, such as tea culture, Sichuan opera, spicy food, architecture, book cabinets among others. The lighting design is not only functional, but also focuses on these cultural elements. Guests feel like walking into an art gallery instead of an entrance lobby with a transparent pendant roof found also elsewhere and the lift lobby with a scholar chair hung on the wall. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As this is a hotel, its operation remains in the hand of the property management of the client. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The lighting design part of the project started in May, 2017 in the Chengdu, China and the project had a soft opening in January 2019. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The hotel uses energy saving LED lights with high color rendering index to clearly display elements with their proper color. The lights are dimmable with warm white 2700K a color temperature in the guestrooms to make guests comfortable while it is 3000K in public areas like the linear lights wall washing the flashed brick feature wall found in many parts of the hotel., inspired by the local Chengdu's Jing Xiangzi 1.5 km away from the hotel. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: LED soft rope light (14.4 watt 120 degree 2700K color rendering index above 90) LED Low voltage recessed (7 watt 24 degree 2700K color rendering index above 90), LED down light (24 watt 15 degree 2700K color rendering index above 90). Different illuminance calculation a software helped to ensure lighting specifications where matching the specific requirements of each space in terms of lighting (wattage, beam angle and color temperature). CHALLENGE: Location of the lighting fixture are key to achieve the intended lighting effect. In the event that there were conflcts during the construction for the properties of the lighting fixtures such as location, it was necessary to discuss with the customer and the contractor the possibilities to alter the lighting fixture as to keep the effect as close as possible to the design intent.
