Bonsai Wine by Paolo Rossetti

Home > Winners > Design #98346 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Paolo Rossetti (PR) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Paolo Rossetti by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Bonsai here.

Interview with Paolo Rossetti at Wednesday 29th of April 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
PR: The idea comes from the "darkness" of the glass bottle. An abstract space on which I thought to represent a single Bonsai vine but made with metals: silver and gold.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
PR: Give an idea of value, a sign that immediately recalls the Bonsai vine: precious and solemn. In particular, to represent the contrast of the plant (the vine - a typical western plant), and the name Bonsai which sounds oriental.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
PR: I hope it can be an example of good design and be inspirational.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
PR: About a month.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
PR: The design was commissioned by Podere Le Ripi and before reaching the shape seen on the bottle I spoke directly with the owner of the Podere, Francesco Illy, who had clear ideas.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
PR: The design is the exclusive property of Podere Le Ripi.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
PR: The sense of richness and prestige characteristic of this wine.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
PR: The project was born from direct observation of plants, based on images of the vines. I thought of a subtle and refined line for the description of the plant.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
PR: The target is represented by Food enthusiasts, Wine Lovers and Collectors.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
PR: The execution in screen printing directly on glass is a characterization point that distinguishes Bonsai from other wines with labels.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
PR: Bonsai is the name that Podere Le Ripi has given to the particular way of growing vines. The cultivation method forces the plant to minimal spaces and deep root development to reach the richest nutrients. This is why the plant is smaller. Hence the fancy name Bonsai: a miniature plant.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
PR: The design was made with overlapping vector paths.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
PR: An oriental-inspired name flanked by a western plant.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
PR: For the realization it was necessary the competence of a printer who could realize the serigraphy reproductions on glass. In particular, for a design so delicate and rich in details.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
PR: Technology was fundamental in the execution of the design. In fact, it guaranteed the precision of the design and the perfect overlap of the details and in particular of the metal parts.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
PR: The design was not influenced by any research data and was a free interpretation to tell Bonsai.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
PR: The most important challenge was concentrated in the printing phase. Once the sample was printed, we waited for the passage in the high temperature furnaces to fix the metals to the glass. It is only in that phase that we understood if we had achieved the result.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
PR: It seemed to me that Bonsai had the characteristics to participate in an international competition where the competition is always of a high standard. The challenge was the motivation.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
PR: Any idea if poorly realized loses its strength. Also in this case, which sees a simple design, the quality of the realization is essential.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
