Interview with Bonggu (Jeremy) Kang at Tuesday 5th of May 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
BK: A rich tradition of Catholicism meets trend and luxury. Along with the trend that food and the act of eating have become fashionable, the inspiration for the project comes from 2018's Met Gala fashion theme of Catholicism. The name of the brand, Saintly Flavours, represents the rich tradition of high-quality food made by medieval monasteries. Also, the names of gourmet products from seven Abbeys of France represent the values of Catholicism, such as Meditation, Benediction, Generosity, Moderation, Patience, Reward, Happiness, Integrity.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
BK: I really focused on creating the meet the standards of both the long history of Art of Catholicism and also the trend of the luxurious market. So I tied to use a quite traditional looking illustration style with the careful usage of the font and composition of the label.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
BK: There's no further plan for this design for now.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
BK: It took about two weeks to develop the concept only. And about a month to develop the whole package design and finished the project. It was an intensive month to finish it.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
BK: It was quite interesting when I saw 2018's MET Gala theme: Catholicism. I've always loved the Arts of the era of Catholicism: Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerism, and Baroque. So when I saw those beautiful dresses inspired by Catholicism and Masters like Michelangelo, I instantly thought that I should design something with this theme. And I did.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
BK: This was a part of the college class project, which meant I designed it for myself. However, if anyone or company would love to buy the design or work with me, I'm fully open to it. I hope to see the actual product to be sold in the market someday.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
BK: I've studied painting in Fine Art and have loved Art history. And I also like to research the current trends in design and fashion. Based on those, I've volunteered and worked as a graphic designer for years. I think those background and experience have made me design this work.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
BK: My college instructors, Anne Ahmad, Daemon Baldwin, Darinka Aguirre, and Jennifer Deon, helped me and taught me a lot to become what I am now as a graphic designer. And personally, the design works of Marian Bentjes and Stranger & Stranger always inspire me.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
BK: It would be the consumer group that has a high-end lifestyle and those who can appreciate the Arts and all the products inspired by arts. And of course, those who love wine and cheese.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
BK: First of all, it can be a clear brand identity based on the theme of Catholicism. Second, it has to be the execution of the detailed illustrations.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
BK: The name of the brand, Saintly Flavours, represents the rich tradition of high-quality food made by medieval monasteries. Also, the names of gourmet products from seven Abbeys of France represent the values of Catholicism, such as Meditation, Benediction, Generosity, Moderation, Patience, Reward, Happiness, Integrity.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
BK: After researching and establishing the concept of the project, I moved on to the sketching process for the brand logo and each package. Then I made progress on the whole illustrations part and design details of each package.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
BK: Detailed illustrations and the usage of matching typefaces.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
BK: I had lots of discussions with the instructor of the class, Anne Ahmad. She guided me to develop and finish the project.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
BK: The technology of high-quality printing on thick and artistic paper is important for the project.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
BK: I researched the food gift designs, wine gift packages, gourmet food packages, luxury food packages and etc. Also, I visited high-end food shops, foreign food shops, and high-end deli section of the department store, in both online and offline.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
BK: The challenge of the project was to balance the beauty and fanciness of the ornamental elements from the rich tradition and the modern luxury appealing contemporary consumers. The usage of the chosen typeface and the mindful composition of graphic elements helped to win the balanced look of the outcome.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
BK: I think the quality of the outcome of the project was satisfying, and it would be nice to show the project to the others in the same field. And I want to give the project the chance to be judged fairly by others.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
BK: It was quite intensive month to work on this project, especially in the sense of time management part. I had been dealing with many other projects going on already when I was working on the project. So I learned how to cope with tight schedules with several projects at the same time.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
