Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Jose Roca (RJ) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Jose Roca by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Tamsa here.

Interview with Jose Roca at Wednesday 6th of May 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
RJ: The main idea behind this design is to make a memory over our heritage as Colombians and reflect on our past and traditions.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
RJ: I wanted to create an object that challenge the normal perception or conceptions over it. That is why I decided to create a money bank that will be displayed wide open and not hidden and shy.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
RJ: Start production right away and promote it in my country.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
RJ: The main concept took around two weeks. Refining it with its proportions and materials took around three months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
RJ: This design was born from a personal need of getting an object where I could place the items I carry on my pockets when I get home.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
RJ: By the moment I am producing it by myself. But I am open to anyone interested in getting the production rights.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
RJ: The need to be organized.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
RJ: I look for tons of references of money banks, to filter what I found interesting on them and how could I make it better, also check on the pre-Columbian crafts that can be found in Museo de Oro in Bogotá, Colombia.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
RJ: Anyone who want a decorative item that tells a story, to open room for a dialogue that goes around heritage, myths and history.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
RJ: This object is not just a money bank. This is a tribute for heritage.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
RJ: Tamsa is the Muiscas term used to refer to offerings or tributes, a term that is coherent with the main purpose of this object.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
RJ: At the beginning I made use of the classical pen and paper. After this used different resources as CAD and paper models to define proportions and dimensions. Also where made play and wood prototypes.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
RJ: Is an unexpected object. As seen for the first time, this cannot be directly related to a money bank. So it creates a surprise effect when discover its main purpose and relationship with the myth that inspired it.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
RJ: I had help of a local workshop called Casa de Barro where the molds and first pieces where developed.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
RJ: This is a mixture of handcraft and machinery, since the vase is made by hand and the dish is made through an embossing process.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
RJ: Expert surveys where made to define the most pleasant proportion, materials and finishing combinations and assembly methods.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
RJ: The main challenges appeared during the production face, where some parts and olds had to be remade a few times to get the final and proper dimension.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
RJ: I was motivated by some colleagues who had made part of this competition in the past and helped me understand all the benefits of making part of this selected group.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
RJ: Helped me being more organized and efficient in the creation of new projects.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
