Interview with SATORU NAKAHARA at Sunday 3rd of May 2020 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? SN: My theme is to express and image to those who saw the story with the black created by the minimal light. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? SN: New black expression and storytelling by photography. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? SN: When more works come out, I would like to design a solo exhibition or a photo book. Hopefully I'll be happy with the request. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? SN: It is about an hour to take one picture, it changed the exposure. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? SN: This design is not commissioned. It is my inquiries and challenges. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? SN: I'm at a loss. I have not to know how to distribute and to print at excellent quality my works. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? SN: I wanted to pursue a new way of expression. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? SN: As a great artist, It is Rembrandt and Vermeer, Leonardo da Vinci. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? SN: Old patrons, nobles FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? SN: There are objects to be photographed everywhere. And It took and changed by tools that anyone can use. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? SN: It is like about the theme and suggestion. For me, in the casual scenes of everyday life, if we can change the point of view, it will be made more dramatic. But I don't know what else to express. Now I feel exaggerated about this title. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? SN: Windows photo and Adobe photoshop. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? SN: It was taken near family trips and home and design work has be done at home. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? SN: Only my daughters and my wife. They are not specialists. I just took them in the photo. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? SN: It is one tool to find a good point. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? SN: No. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? SN: In my photograph, an accidental person is always taken. People didn't show up and I have to wait for them for a long time. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? SN: One day suddenly I received an invitation email for the design award. Only that I posted my works on SNS community many years ago, So I was so happy to hear from her. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? SN: I had the opportunity to objectively review my design and works. By changing the view of point and designing by the composition of light, I can revive that time and story in my work. That is one great step for me and is one evolution. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? SN: Thank you for watching my work, that alone makes me so happy.
