Home > Winners > Design #87981 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Maxxis International and Cheng Shin Rubber Ind (MC) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Maxxis International and Cheng Shin Rubber Ind by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design T Razr here.

Interview with Maxxis International and Cheng Shin Rubber Ind at Monday 4th of May 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MC: The main inspiration came from the user research we did on drivers. The requirements on the tires while driving are obvious, the more contact area provided by the tires, the safer it will be. Among all the methods of changing the contact area on tires, we would go for the solution that has a bigger opportunity of going into production line. In the manufacturer`s point of view, our idea is to be able to use the existing machines to manufacture the new concept design. Therefore, it is the most effective way for the company.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MC: We want to provide the drivers with a much safer driving experience. By actively analyze the driving status, the drives do not need to worry much about the settings of the transformative tire. The tire changes only under necessary conditions, and it`s totally automatic.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MC: We will continually working on the technical issue of T Razr, hoping the design will one day be realized and be seen on the market.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MC: Mostly one to two years.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MC: Upon seeing the technologies of setting sensors inside tires become more mature, we thought the idea of realizing T Razr cannot be more practical. That is the reason why we decided to make the design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MC: We intent to produce T Razr ourselves.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MC: We have been working on sensors studies and tread design for years, so we try to do a combination of both researches and the result was T Razr.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MC: The target users estimated to be general drivers five to ten years from now.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MC: This is a very practical and producible concept tire, apart from other similar concepts.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MC: There is a family of tires that is good for their controlling performance that named by Razr in our brand. And “T”stands for transformative. This is how T Razr got its name from.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MC: We used tools like AutoCAD , Rhino and Adobe.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MC: The contact area of T Razr can be changed into different sizes according to different driving conditions.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MC: We worked with sales to gain insights from the users` end, and we worked with technique team when we had problems realizing the transformative structure.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MC: The core of T Razr is the sensors embedded inside the tread. The sensors receive and respond to the signals, and then transform the tread to deal with different driving conditions.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MC: We have studied sensor technology, electromagnetic, electrophorus and aerohydrodynamic during the designing of T Razr.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MC: Safety issue is very important when it comes to designing car parts like tires. Tires are also products that have relatively long usage hours. The high temperature and continually movement both make the environment inside tires critical for sensors to be installed. We have put a lot of effort on finding ways to maintain the function of the sensors while the cars are running.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MC: We think it is a very good chance to elevate the design ability in the team. Once awarded, it is also a good chance for the world to see the brand.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MC: We try to solve every obstacle we have encountered during the whole design process.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
