Interview with Iker Ortiz at Wednesday 6th of March 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? IO: The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex which is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen, Germany. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? IO: The main focus was on achieving a specific shape and texture in the pieces. A finish on that will reflect the texture of the old charcoal mine. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? IO: Expand our brand on the USA and Europe, keep designing new jewelry collections. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? IO: Six months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? IO: I decided to pursuit my own inspiration after a trip I made to Germany and visiting the coal mine. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? IO: Produce the work myself. I have my own workshop in Mexico City. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? IO: I'm always looking for new ideas, trying to design with unconventional materiales used for jewelry such as stainless steel and electrostatic paint in this ocassion. It was interesting to find new shapes, for example, in rings and necklaces in this collection but always with the idea of creating portable pieces. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? IO: No FS: Who is the target customer for his design? IO: Architects, designers, creatives, or any people interested in buying a jewelry piece with great design and even a little of art on it. Anyone looking for a really special piece.
