Interview with Miko Lim at Sunday 3rd of November 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
ML: The Love Power, Romantic & Precious.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
ML: Main focus on can be some difference with others jewelry shop. Especially can use the logo to be a pendant.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
ML: Malacca is a small town in Malaysia, the exposure and knowledge of original artwork creativity was not well known among the locals especially logo design. I hope by winning this award able to increase the awareness of what original artwork creativity is and the locals will learn to start appreciate it. Besides, I also hope that this award would be an inspiration for other designers to never give up in original artwork creativity as this path is never easy. Lastly, I believe that by winning this award will boost my confidence to start up a classic romantic jewelry boutique.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
ML: 18 days

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
ML: There is this customer found my company in Google search and linked him to Miko Creative Facebook page. He called up one day and I was told he loved my designs and wanted me to design a logo for his jewelry business. It was a brainstorm design as the customer did not give much info on what he wants except two words, SK Joaillerie which was also his business name. I then noticed that Joaillerie is a French word, and to me Italy is a romance country. Therefore, romantic concept is the idea that I looking into for his logo design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
ML: The design was an artwork to be sold to my customer, however, he agreed to let me have it back after knowing that I was nominated for this competition. And of course a new logo design will be replaced for him in exchange. Trademark for this design has been applied and I do not have the intention to sell it at the moment.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
ML: Fantasy. The passion and desire can overcome all difficulties.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
ML: No.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
ML: Couples and Females.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
ML: There is already a jewelry company called SK, so I do not want to use the same name for my design and is very common for jewelry shop to use Swan as their design concept and everyone knows Swan represent romance. I want to be different, instead of using Swan, I used French Angelfish which also represent romance.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
ML: SK, Spark and Koyi, the holder of company. Joaillerie means jewelry in French.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
ML: Adobe Illustrator.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
ML: It creates LOVE.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
ML: No body, it's design by myself. Drawing in Adobe Illustrator software.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
ML: Emotional appeal.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
ML: When I decided to implement France Romance for this design, I googled what represent this romance for example flowers or animals. This is when I came across French Angelfish and this fish caught my attention. I then decided to use French Angelfish as my idea.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
ML: I am using Fish for this design. The challenge here is how to not give people think that it is an aquarium shop but it is a jewelry shop at first sight.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
ML: I have not participate in any design competition so far due to lack of exposure. I came to know this competition is because one my of client mentioned that her previous logo design was designed by a A'Design Award winner. I googled A'Design Award and I only discovered the existence of this competition and decided to give myself a try.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
ML: The space of creativity is infinite. Research and analyze logo every time when i start a job.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
ML: Not at the moment, thank you.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
