Interview with Alexander and Marie Luise Bermbach at Friday 12th of April 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AB: The passion for an individual piece of furniture, which can be enjoyed for a very long time. We want to create furniture that crosses generations. Our product combines classic design with modern elements. We want to bring beautiful design into children's rooms with good craftsmanship, which is attractive for both children and parents. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AB: We wanted to create a piece of furniture that combines aesthetics and beauty, with durability and practicability. We wanted to enable parents to put their kids to sleep in a toxin-free environment, with a good conscience towards producers and the environment. Our design supports the tradition of wickerwork manufacturing, whilst maintaining the Indonesian rainforest and supporting the livelihood of Indonesian workers. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? AB: We searched for a wickerwork cradle for our own children, something which had been used for many previous generations. However, we soon had to realize that, despite its positive properties - light, robust, durable, weatherproof, sustainable - rattan is hardly used in children's furniture, especially beds. So, we figured we had to show some initiative of our own. Through this unfulfilled wish of the Bermbach family, we came upon the idea of designing classical wicker furniture ourselves. Within a very short time we founded a workshop and the very first beds appeared. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AB: We designed this piece of furniture so we could produce this bed ourselves. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? AB: It is a beautiful and decorative accessory for a modern lifestyle that combines familiar design, functionality and aesthetics with natural materials, skilled craftsmanship and high quality. Inspired by vintage designs, our beds appear natural and familiar to people. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? AB: We were inspired by vintage furniture designs. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AB: Parents that appreciate sustainability, design, quality and durability. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? AB: The innovative aspect of babycrib LOLA is that it is modular. The basket and substructure of the bed are variable elements, which can be combined in diverse ways. Moreover, our furniture is made to last. Compared to mass-produced beds, our beds are of a very high quality and designed to cross generations. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AB: Our first born child is called Lola, so we dedicated this design to her.
