Interview with Dong Han at Saturday 20th of April 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
DH: Primitive art is the source of my creative inspiration. It is abstract and far from reality, yet closest to spirituality, intensely alive and bursting in all directions. Primitive art in some ways is closer to the essence of art, it emphasizes the integration of human, animals and nature. It seems to me, that primitive art has temperature, is perceptible, touchable and intimate. It possesses a wonderful expressive power and unspeakable spirituality.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
DH: I hope that the viewers will look for subconscious feelings and happiness in the works, and look for the various symbolic representations. Think about the relationship between human beings and nature, think about the connection between souls in the universe, awaken the power in peoples hearts and an endless affection throughout the world.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
DH: This award is very encouragingļ¼Œ it feels great to have my work recognized. In the future my plan is to participate in more exhibitions so that more people can understand my artistic style.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
DH: It takes about 3 months time.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
DH: The rooster is one of the 12 animals on the Chinese zodiac, it represents masculinity and power. The style of the sculpture itself came from my own inspiration.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
DH: The sculpture is planned to be sold.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
DH: I am very happy creating such works of art, I feel it can bring great spiritual enjoyment and pleasure to the viewer.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
DH: I have been greatly influenced by Chinese prehistoric sculptures and sculptor Henry Moore.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
DH: Those who like nature.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
DH: There were no detailed plans and design drafts at the beginning, I designed and made changes as I was making it.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
DH: Very simple to make sculpturing tools.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
DH: The most primitive and natural state, I pay more attention to the visual language of the human spirit.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
DH: The sculpture I made by myself, and I then communicated with professionals from the foundry of bronze works, who then casted the sculpture.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
DH: Precision casting techniques are very important to this piece.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
DH: No data analysis at all

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
DH: This is an abstract work of art, I search for feelings and a way to bring life into the sculpture, it was not intentionally designed in this manner. There are many risks and uncertainties in the creative process.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
DH: In the process of sculpting I must respect various aspects of nature. Most of my inspiration and techniques come from the observation of nature, such as the human body, animal bones, big trees, mountains and so on.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
