Shield Watch by Nepto

Home > Winners > Design #75976 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Nepto (VI) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Nepto by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Shield here.

Interview with Nepto at Friday 24th of May 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
VI: Bringing something new in watch design is not something easy because we have some restriction due to the small size of this accessory and due to the mechanical movement into it. And the first idea was to do a watch not round and not square as you can find everywhere. So, I started my design with the shape of the case and worked only on that at the beginning. It is easy for the human eyes to appreciate round or square geometrical shapes, but I think that we really bring a unique and nice new shape in the watch industry. I also wanted to make a relation between this collection and Paris, the city where I come from. I got the inspiration from the coat of arm of Paris which has some vintage similar shape that I modernized.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
VI: I wanted to bring something else. To hear people saying: I've never seen anything like that. I focused a lot on the shape but also on the dial and the hands because it is the first things we can see on the watch.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
VI: I would like to use it to develop my company further. I’m proud of it and I want to use it as much as I can.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
VI: It took me six months from the first scratch to the final prototype.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
VI: I designed this particular object because I'm really interested in product design and especially in watches. I knew that this accessory could be designed differently.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
VI: I produced this design and did everything on my own for my company and I produced it at 100 pieces to sell it.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
VI: I wanted since while make design and I knew I had the capacity to do it. I love product design and even more watches.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
VI: No, not really.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
VI: The target customer is a man between 25 and 80 years old who like to have a quality watch for an affordable price.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
VI: It is a specific design in a way that no one has seen this shop before in the watch industry.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
VI: When you look at the shape of the watch you understand directly that it is the NEPTO SHIELD. And the name of the model, the blue ocean, is in link with the colour of the dial and Neptune.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
VI: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, Indesign, FreeCAD

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
VI: The most unique aspect is the shape of the case and the colour of the dial with the selection of the chevron and the numbers.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
VI: I worked a bit with my sister who is also a product designer. No one else.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
VI: We need to know pretty well the mechanical movement to select the right one. It has to be well integrated into your watch. Then you need a good knowledge of materials.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
VI: I've just conducted some internet research but the main inspiration came from observation around me.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
VI: One of the biggest challenges I had to face was to find suppliers who were able to make the glass and the case of the watch because it is quite hard to realize and to have all the waterproof and resistance test with this kind of shape.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
VI: I believe in the originality of our design and the capacity of it to be better than the other. Then it comes naturally to be in competition again other competitors.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
VI: I learn everything and I improve myself every day in a way that it is my first design in my all life.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
VI: No, it was really well covered.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
