Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Nu Infinity (NF) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Nu Infinity by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Opulent 30 here.

Interview with Nu Infinity at Wednesday 15th of May 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
NF: The brief was clear. Oriental with a twist, grandeur and practical.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
NF: We wanted to not do the norms. We always wanted to challenge our previous designs and do something different constantly. This, like the previous award project we won, is another milestone or stepping stone for us for even greater things. As our designs mature and grow deep in meaning, we forge forward by experimenting new material, attemping new construction methods and refining our design approaches.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
NF: We wish to catapult ourselves forward by mastering this design, design process and construct-ability and come up with even more mind-blogging ideas and end products.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
NF: It took us 4 months to design and refine the idea.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
NF: Initially commissioned because the Client asked for an oriental approach with a twist. Being Nu Infinity, we tend to like to push it further by assuming a more challenging brief to come up with something that is beyond fulfilling the brief but to open up new dimensions.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
NF: Produce it for ourselves. Design and construction.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
NF: This is just a milestone and our design is ever evolving.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
NF: All the works from other designers in the world are always an influence. Zaha Hadid has influence us to defy the norms and push the limits of design and construction.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
NF: We are looking at targeting young high-flyers which are open to new ideas and able to accept conventional approaches.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
NF: The ability to assimilate our local flavours to internationally accepted and standard of design is the key. We cannot just copy and paste what is popular abroad but instead, converge them with local ideas, taste, material and practical reasons.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
NF: First thing that came to mind is opulence for its end product. 30 being the level of this penthouse.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
NF: 3Dstudio Max and VRay.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
NF: The forward thinking idea of converging western ideas and our local Malaysian ideas whilst catering to a Chinese home owner.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
NF: We engaged a highly skilled fine laser cut specialist for all pattern cutting and electroplated finishes.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
NF: To be able to visualize and portray the ambience of the end product is vital to convince the client of the final outcome.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
NF: Understanding the various mixtures of material when they are parked next to each other, their thickness and chemical reactions put us to the ultimate test.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
NF: To truly discover how we fair, there is nothing better than to pitch our works against what other firms are doing in the rest of the world.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
NF: We understand the requirements and standards better in what are considered the best works in the different categories which will then prepare us better for more challenging projects and when we venture out of Malaysia.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
