Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer shuai wang (SW) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of shuai wang by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Qin Garden here.

Interview with shuai wang at Friday 22nd of February 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SW: Party A who settled in South America entrusted us with reconstruction of her ancestral house. Her father’s wish before his death was to renovate this house. She told us that, her father took care of her when she was little, so she wanted to remember her father by this house

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SW: The design thought of the overall project started from function to architectural forms and then returned to function again.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SW: Design inspiration: as for the building outline, the designer was inspired by a Chinese term, namely “守护” (which means to guard and defend), and designed the building outline on the basis of a gesture

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SW: As Party A settled down overseas, we defined the building as a holiday villa. Unlike traditional holiday villas, it has an ancestral hall. The ancestral hall is not only for ancestor worship, but includes objects relating the past of the old house. In the future, used furniture and objects will be displayed in the room and it will be more like a family museum.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SW: After reconstruction, the building can meet needs of accommodation, family gathering and activity of children. We hope it can carry memory, offer comfortable living experience and continue to grow.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SW: We hope it can carry memory, offer comfortable living experience and continue to grow.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SW: It was zero when it was officially put into use. I hope that this space is a space that can grow and can carry more memories."

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SW: The courtyard was named "Guanyuan", which originated from the name of the owner's father. The courtyard was still antique, and the ginkgo in the yard also retained one. "I hope she saw this tree when she came back. I can remember these stories of childhood. We refurbished the house, but we hope to keep some old memories."

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SW: high-quality cement, oak, rubber wood, FLUA illumination, white emulsion paint and aluminum plates

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SW: engaged in design for more than ten years and absorbed ideas from different fields, such as music, fashion and culture. He thinks of interior design on the basis of architectural philosophy, always puts people first, enlarges relations between human and space; nature and space and pay attention to social issues, leading to designs down to earth.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
SW: In the middle of the transformation, I also encountered an unsatisfactory accident. The spiral staircase determined by the original plan produced a slight deviation in size. The designer had something that he could not understand and could not bear. After some psychological struggle, the stairs were removed and redone.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SW: "This is not the same as the house in the city. The village has innate natural conditions, a good yard, and a good area for activities. So we hope that when the children come back, they will be happy to play inside." Guardian and heritage, Always running through my design.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
