Interview with Lollypop Design Studio at Thursday 2nd of May 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
LS: In India, there are over 2000 career alternatives that do not require a degree but are high in demand and pays better compared to traditional degrees. The app aims to inspire and encourage creativity and instill a sense that every skill matter. Grades Don’t Matter is not a master class, it focuses on learning the basics from the pros and making a sound career decision. It also aims to change the parent’s perception of new career options by providing a cost-benefit analysis.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
LS: Grades Dont Matter is an alternative education platform and is conceptualized with an aim to bridge the gap between degrees and skills. The app provides in-depth learning from the legends themselves for 30 odd careers and is divided into a three-phased approach for ease of learning. The app also considers the short attention span of youth and hence, fast-paced lessons have been designed with only 3 -5 minutes of videos and a module can be completed within 45 minutes.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
LS: We are the design partners for Grades Dont Matter, we hope that the app does really well and we get to design the second version where we can enable AR learning on the platform.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
LS: It took us around six months to design, 2 months of Research and 4 months of UX and UI Design

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
LS: When Varun Agarwal approached us, we were thrilled with the idea because we truly believe in an alternate career, we designers are one of them. Hence, we were very passionate about the project. If implemented well, this project can empower millions with a necessary practical skill set that would land them into a job in their desired field.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
LS: The designs are copyright of Grades Dont Matter, owned by Varun Agarwal

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
LS: I think the answer would be the same as in point 5

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
LS: No

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
LS: Every aspiring soul who wants to acquire a skill set in the area of their interest

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
LS: We used ADHD specialist for crafting modules to help incorporate the short attention span of the individuals. The whole course is crafted in a series of small modules; 3 -5 minutes of videos and a module can be completed within 45 minutes.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
LS: Grades Dont Matter is self-explanatory; we want the world to believe there are many skills which are not dependent on your college degrees. Basic education is a must but grades don't define you, your skill set and passion defines you.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
LS: We have used photoshop, illustrator, sketch, and invision. For video production, voice artists, adobe premiere pro and filmmaking software’s were used.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
LS: Grades Dont Matter is an alternative education platform and is conceptualized with an aim to bridge the gap between degrees and skills. The app provides an in-depth learning from the legends themselves for 30 odd careers and is divided into a three-phased approach for ease of learning. The app also considers short attention span of youth and hence, fast-paced lessons have been designed with only 3 -5 minutes of videos and a module can be completed within 45 minutes.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
LS: We worked with Rakesh reddy for video production

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
LS: It's a mobile application with a simple to use interface. Technology has been integrated into crafting videos but the app is basic to encourage students from remote areas to also have access to information.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
LS: We conducted two-fold research with the target audience and the influencers; questionnaires, focused group discussions, and interviews were done with the target audience to gauge their field of interest, observe their online learning pattern and discover the pain points with the existing platform. While the influencers were researched to ideate on the feasibility of learning the skill online and to discover the best module that would help learn the career fundamentals.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
LS: The main challenge was to craft a course that would fit the short attention span of the youth. Second, was to craft an engaging platform that could break-through the existing clutter in the education domain. The research helped us gauge that youth were looking to learn the practical fundamentals in the domain that would help them land a job. Hence, the app combined these requirements and serve as a one-stop solution. While it also breaks the traditional stereotype of Indian parents and helps them understand the earning capabilities of these contemporary careers.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
LS: We have been winning awards for the past three years continuously and are ranked among the Best UX UI Design Studio globally. We want to put forth our designs in front of the world basically and spread that India is full of designers.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
LS: we had to continuously improvise on modules, interactions while ensuring that simplicity was maintained throughout

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
LS: Thank you for giving this award.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
