Interview with Tonny Wirawan Suriadjaja at Wednesday 22nd of May 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? TS: The site takes benefit from the beautiful surrounding of deep valley and has an advantage of its proximity to the forest conservatory, which provides tranquil atmosphere of the mountain side. The main idea is to allow the users to have different orientation in different room and have almost 270 degree view to the surrounding valleys. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? TS: My main focus in designing this project is to make the building programs in different altitude offer different experience and views. It is intended to be a place where the client can enjoy and take a break from city’s busy life. Aside from the living spaces and service area supporting the building, the client’s request was also an outdoor multifunction area which can be used to host various events. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? TS: I think this particular design concept will suit to the site condition and nice cool weather on the location. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? TS: This design was made to suit this particular location and weather,so the result will be different, if this building is placed on another context. I think this design philosophy has set apart our design from other similar modern house's look. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? TS: Ratna (SSA Lighting) as the lighting consultant FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? TS: We analyzed the view orientation and sun orientation. All wide openings on the living area were created facing the view orientation. The rotated building mass is shifted based on this view range to utilize various views from surrounding. That way the building will have different orientation in different room and have almost 270 degree view to the surrounding valleys. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? TS: Since the site was located at a steep terrain and conservatory forest, survey and deep exploration had been done in order to comply the setbacks requirement. It took 2 to 3 years to apply the owner's permit and convince the local authority as this villa development would impact the surrounding of conservatory forest.
