Interview with Bkt Design at Tuesday 21st of May 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
BD: We seek to devise a slender bollard that orders the flow of cars and pedestrians, is visible in low light conditions without requiring electrical installation, and integrates into the urban environment.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
BD: Develop a product with a subtle aesthetic that is visible from any perspective. This was achieved using a symmetrical graded pattern on the upper section which also sports a reflective material.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
BD: We would like to see it transforming its surroundings in more and more public spaces. Our goal is to create a product whose aesthetics remain current throughout the years of its long useful life.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
BD: From September 2016 to November 2017.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
BD: It is the result of an analysis we undertook into the current lack of infrastructure that invites us to enjoy and make the most of our city.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
BD: Currently, it is only sold in Mexico by BKT urban furniture.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
BD: Our interest to improve cities.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
BD: Our work is not only influenced by designers, but also people with different knowledge bases who contribute positive ideas towards improving our society.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
BD: Our main clients are builders, architects, planners, governments, landscapers and urban planners, however our end users are citizens.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
BD: The BO-007 is a distinguished piece thanks to the added aesthetic value of its geometric pattern.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
BD: BKT urban furniture names all its products using a code based on the product type and a consecutive number.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
BD: User-based design methodology, sketching, 3D modeling software, laser cutting for cardboard modeling.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
BD: Its geometric pattern creates visual interest.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
BD: We work with experts in the metalworking industry.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
BD: Technology is of utmost importance to us because enables us to achieve our desired aesthetics and quality levels. We used CNC laser cutting machines for the tube.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
BD: Our creative process was based on our observations of public spaces. We realized the importance of delimiting pedestrian spaces from the flow of motorized vehicles and wanted to create a solution that also contributed contemporary urban aesthetics.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
BD: Researching the appropriate technology to make the product we envisaged while ensuring it was still competitive in terms of cost effectiveness. Another challenge was to resolve the union between the two pieces, while maintaining a clean aesthetic.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
BD: When designing this product we realized that it had the qualities to compete in prestigious international competitions.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
BD: When developing any product we are always obliged to investigate, observe and project. These processes introduce us to new areas of knowledge, bring us closer to people who share their experience and awaken us the concern of analyzing the environment by contributing ideas on how to improve it.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
BD: None.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
