Interview with Jingwen Zhang at Monday 7th of May 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JZ: The inspiration for the collection is focusing on people's mental loneliness. With the developing of the economic, people are busy with their work. Though they are working every day, their spiritual world might be lonely. Especially for those people who are working for their future and having their dream fulfilled, or a foreigner hoping to be accompanied and comforted.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JZ: The Comfort is designed to appeal people's mind and take more care of themselves in the physical, mental health. The collection pieces are mainly made of fabric and cotton as soft as our pillow and comfortable makes people feeling relax and being accompanied.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JZ: I am planning to try to see if this product would be possible to publish and produced by the factory and then release in the market.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JZ: It takes about one month.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JZ: The original concept of the series originated from the concern of loneliness in the metropolitan people. The designer studied specific groups who relocated to big cities to work and sometimes felt lonesome without friends and family.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JZ: There are some companies currently in touch with me about it.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JZ: How to remind and urge people to pay attention to mental health is one of the essential factors in the design for the author to consider. Hope through the work I call people to pay attention to mental health and comfort these brave dream-makers through their jobs. The author is trying to remind people the importance of psychological health.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JZ: No.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JZ: Different types of pillows, such as pillows for pregnant ladies.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JZ: I combined it with the fashion ideas for accessories design and also for the functionality concept in industrial design.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JZ: By exploring this particular group of people, I designed a series of cozy works trying to give them comfort and accompany feeling while using.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JZ: I used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for design and made the patterns by myself.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JZ: All products in this collections are all transforming products

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JZ: I did all design, pattern making and producing by myself.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JZ: The transforming methods are the essential part of this design.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JZ: Yes, the design influenced a lot by the particular group of people after researching.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JZ: How to hand fill all those cotton and make it transforming are the challenges during my design process.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JZ: I wish my design would be recognized by the public and market. And I also hope more people would be influenced by my design and paying more attention to appealing people for their design.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JZ: I learned a lot in the field of fabric treatment and fashion pattern making as an accessory designer.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
