Interview with Yu Hin Wilson Mak at Wednesday 7th of March 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
YM: Parameterize design, public circulation, and hybrid characteristic of the project.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
YM: Due to the massive interior facade gifted from the space, we intended to enhance the sense of a gallery tunnel. We believe to achieve a high unity by combining the public purchase behavior, as public flow, and the massive tunnel designed elevation.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
YM: To prove, and improve our quality of design.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
YM: 2 months

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
YM: We decided to pursuit an inspiration, which is based on a commercial awareness to match the public.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
YM: It is a project designed for a client of ours.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
YM: Enthusiasm

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
YM: No, we did it by ourselves.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
YM: Teenagers, Middle-age, Elders.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
YM: first of all, the commercial concept in China is a fresh idea. Moreover, existed design are not quite focus on element integration, which we have to set a united design language to speak for different kind of elements.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
YM: Hybrid is come from the impression of the commercial concept.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
YM: CAD, 3DMAX, PHOTOSHOP, INDESIGN. Pencil and paper.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
YM: Good visualization in shop drawings.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
YM: Yes. members in Keno Design.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
YM: Multiple layered floor plans and elevations for different skills of workers to work together at the same time, without disturbing each other, to match the limited time before grand opening.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
YM: Yes is influenced by advanced market design internet research.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
YM: To keep different kinds of elements and designs in one piece, to let every unique zone designing shine but still keeping their feet together.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
YM: Advised by a friend

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
YM: Attentive in details forever.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
YM: That is mostly all.
