Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer João Faria (JF) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of João Faria by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Mikado here.

Interview with João Faria at Monday 30th of April 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JF: MIKADO is a playful line of furniture that reminds us of simple games in a simple world. It is going back to my childhood and remembering my favourite places. These are objects to make people smile.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JF: There are several items inspired by the game MIKADO, but not bold enough, in my opinion. So, I wanted to explore this concept to its limit, but designing something functioning and distinctive.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JF: To make it become a "must-have" design.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JF: From March 2017 until January 2018.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JF: I always pursuit my inspiration. I reckon to say that this is my motto!

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JF: It has been produced by myself. It is part of the portfolio of EMOTIONAL OBJECTS brand.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JF: The initial idea was almost a challenge: how to explore the design to its limit, and still make it functional? I think the bet was won.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JF: We are always influenced by other objects and people, even if it is unconsciously.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JF: This line of furniture is very versatile... it can be for both private clients, but also a commercial project. Above all, for people that want a distinctive decoration element.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JF: As I said before, the fact that I took my inspiration to the limit.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JF: It is obvious, isn't it?

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JF: I always use the CAD program as well as all the tools in my lab.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JF: Just look at it! Impossible to be more unique, don't you think? The odd angles of the metals, which are part of the wood, like inseparable and continuous pieces.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JF: I always work with the best artisans, who advise me with their great knowledge and craft.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JF: We had to develop tools and perfected some techniques to cut the steel (laser cut) and wood with the right angles.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JF: I am always researching... always looking for inspiration... and learning with the best practice.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JF: The technical aspects... how to make it functional and sturdy without giving up of its inspiration. Almost as carving a sculpture.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JF: It is always important to have some feedback of what we are doing. Design competitions are the best assessment tools.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JF: I learnt that if you work hard and if you surround yourself with the best technicians, you won't fail, and, if you are lucky, you will stand from the crowd.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
JF: Just to thank you!

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
