Interview with Jackie Lai at Monday 22nd of October 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JG: The owner of this unit approached us to create a bold concept of their home where they can live in the future, the concept is inspired by the Sci-Fi movie Passengers starred by Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JG: The principal consideration is into streamlined shapes of the walls and in the functional application of inclinations and bends. Despite the fact of the flowing lines of the walls, the decorative elements, the unit need to fulfill its junction for a house unit with comfort and practicality.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JG: I hope to able to do similar projects where styling vs technology.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JG: The project took me a few weeks to come out with the final schematic design.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JG: The owner would like to live in a home for the future, I was the shortlisted one for the project. The concept is inspired by the Sci-Fi movie Passengers starred by Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JG: My design is produced and fabricated by selected workers and specialist . I believe I would continue to produce thru the same pipeline.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JG: The desire to fuse lighting design with technology to this project.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JG: Yes Miki Shi is my co-designer for this project after I came out with the schematic design.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JG: The target customer is a family of three consists of a couple and a teenage daughter.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JG: I would like to use the latest technology available in the market for this project.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JG: It basically reflect our perception how the future house would look like.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JG: There are CAD and 3D Max involved in this project.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JG: The unique aspect of this project is the flow of architectural language with technology.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JG: I collaborate with lighting, automation and security specialist .

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JG: There would motion-sensored lighting and, controlled music and smart home system.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JG: As there are limited resources are local designers, most of which are thru Zaha Hadid and Daniel libeskind.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JG: The challenges are the costs, the limitation of the contractors and builders to fabricate the furniture.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JG: I have decide after i get hold of the news of your competition.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JG: I have improved thru the capability of smart home system.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
JG: nil
