Home > Winners > Design #64021 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer ozestudi (JM) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of ozestudi by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Minimbike here.

Interview with ozestudi at Sunday 6th of May 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JM: All the success of the project focuses on Minimfit World, which is the company with which the Minimbike was jointly designed. His clarity of ideas and his commitment to innovation were key to achieving such a radical and differentiating design. Minimfit did not want its first static bike to have references in the market, it wanted to open its own aesthetic language and we believe that it has been achieved.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JM: At all times the intention of Minimfit World was to achieve a product that, unlike its market analogues, could be placed in any home context and that the Minimbike had an aesthetic and / or decorative value. All this without ever forgetting the technological and mechanical aspects. In this aspect the product also incorporates many novelties.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JM: Minimfit World is already immersed in the design of a new Spinning bike and again the same design process will be followed. Now we have more experience and we have also expanded the portfolio of suppliers, expanding the possibilities of working with new innovations.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JM: Designing this concept was a rather laborious process that started with the rejection of many radical ideas. Little by little it was modeling a presence that was the taste of Minimfit. A process that lasted almost a year of hard daily work.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JM: The final result has a lot of inspiration, yes. It was, as we have said, a laborious and long process. Minimfit reviewed drawings and drawings with slight and subtle variations until one of them was OK. It was found fully leveled. That's when the authentic design process began. Make reality what had already been defined in a sketch. But what a sketch! It was not a simple project.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JM: The bicycle is manufactured by the company Minimfit World itself, which has also been a challenge because it is the first product that it manufactures.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JM: The briefing proposed by Minimfit was very detailed, so there was little chance of doing a different project in terms of personality and differentiation. The success of the project resides in the clarity of initial ideas of Minimfit.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JM: For the design of the product, many references were reviewed, both current and historical. It was looking for a very, very particular piece with organic aspect. In this process, as can be seen, the great architect Antoni Gaudí, a modernist, influenced us a lot.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JM: The users of Minimbike are very diverse. In fact anyone who maintains a healthy and dynamic training life is likely to be a Minimfit user.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JM: His aesthetic language is unprecedented. And the proposal of materials even less. It is a bicycle different from everything that exists. This already makes the product different objectively. But the value that also adds Minimfit from your training APP, make Minimbike an exceptional product.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JM: The philosophy of Minimfit, the manufacturing company, is very clear. He wants to bring to all homes technologically advanced and aesthetically minimalist fitness equipment. Hence the name.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JM: For the design of the Minimbike there was a lot of sketching process. First many pencil drawings were made and once the profile was decided on it was defined in 3D, which was also a very laborious process of adjustment and constant adjustment of measurements, surfaces and lines.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JM: The highlight of the Minimbike is very clear that is its presence. The cleaning of its lines and its two forks where the entire product sits. A relatively small drum and a continuity of its surfaces. Its structure, as we have said, is unprecedented in the market.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JM: Minimfit formed a very broad and diverse team for the design of this bike that included engineers, designers, electronics, grafiscas, marketing professionals and trainers.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JM: The role of technology in this design is everything. From the innovative manufacturing processes of the bike body to its fully adjustable training APP to its universalization of common devices, the technology is in the Minimbike a key aspect.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JM: Although quite traditional, that is, without using BITDATA, it has, of course, that the design process had a lot of very precise data, extracted from market studies and analysis.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JM: The project had many challenges. Making a continuous shape of this size with structural value was something that had not been done before. In this sense, the contribution of knowledge of the suppliers and their studies allowed us to make it a reality. In terms of connectivity, communication and the use of bicycles with common devices was also a great challenge.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JM: We were aware that the Minimbike was a very particular design and we wanted it to be valued beyond our own opinion. For this reason we think that subjecting it to the judgment of experts, in addition very numerous and within a contest with this prestige would give us a more objective assessment in this regard. We are very satisfied and we are very grateful for the positive evaluation.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JM: This project has made us learn a lot. It is impossible to explain here everything we have learned about technology, materials and processes. So much so that we expect many more successes in the developments that we are taking right now from Minimfit. We hope to win in 2019 another time! Ha, ha, ha.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
JM: We were very surprised by the impact the project has had. And all the positive comments that it has provoked. We want to thank everyone for the confidence and interest. Thank you very much.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
