Interview with Nadine Grenier at Sunday 29th of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? NG: This design is an illustrated map from Saint Aubin du Cormier for the greetings card 2018. As the book "Where's Wally?", this comic map illustrates lots of details from the city of Saint Aubin du Cormier. So, everyone is invited to recognise or discover the most important monuments, evenements, places... FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? NG: I wanted to propose an original and artistic greetings card. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? NG: In a second step, from this greeting card, a giant map to color of the entire city could be realized and also a touristic map for the unhabitants of the city and tourists. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? NG: The creation represents one month of work with the researchs, the creation of the illustration, the discussions and corrections. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? NG: Also inspired by an idea from Omy brand which creates big illustrated posters of famous cities as Paris, New York, San Francisco, Berlin...I have found it could be a good idea to propose an illustrated map for the greetings card of the city of Saint Aubin du Cormier. This is a very beautiful small town with a castle, a pond, a historic city center ... that was an ideal setting for this drawing project. I proposed the idea to the municipality of the city and they accepted to develop this concept with me. And as a new inhabitant of the city of Saint Aubin du Cormier, it also was a good way to discover my new city. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? NG: I am not influenced by other designers but as I said, I have been influenced by the Omy brand which creates big illustrated posters of famous cities. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? NG: The inhabitants of the city of Saint Aubin du Cormier and tourists. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? NG: To reuse the illustration for a touristic map, a giant poster to color and why not an exhibition in the city ? FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? NG: The name for this design "The City of Saint Aubin du Cormier Greetings card" was obvious, no ? FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? NG: I used a graphic tablet for two reasons: to facilitate the corrections of the illustrated map and to have a vectorized drawing which will make it possible to print the map in small or big without altering the quality of the drawing. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? NG: The most important part of this design is the pleasure of discovering and recognizing the details of the city where we live ... a tourist and fun discovery. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? NG: I worked with the Mayor Deputy who had to check and valid all the steps of this creation to have a map as realistic as possible. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? NG: Drawing with a graphic tablet offers me the possibility to keep the sensitivity of a drawing by hand and also print the illustration in all sizes. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? NG: To succeed this project, I had an access to a bank of photos of the city by the town hall (google drive). Moreover many meetings with the Deputy Mayor was obligatory to valid all stages of the creation. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? NG: To find the good combination between a realistic representation and an drawing interpretation of the city. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? NG: I have been contacted by one of a Public Relation Manager of A'Design Award. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? NG: I have learned a lot of details about my city.
