Interview with Qun Wen at Sunday 22nd of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? QW: The idea behind the design is to capture the essence of traditional Chinese architecture by engaging new technology and materials. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? QW: The main focus of this work is to make this project a showcase to reshape our cultural self-confidence. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? QW: The award is a big encouragement about the direction we are moving on. We will make this award winning design more exposed to help our practice in design and business development. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? QW: About 3 month. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? QW: This design was commissioned. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? QW: No. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? QW: We are professional architects. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? QW: We have worked with our client and landscape architect closely to make sure we get the best outcome. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? QW: Sunac, one of the largest developers in China. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? QW: We tried to develop a new direction towards translating the traditional Chinese culture with modern approach. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? QW: We used the metal mesh as the key material and it appears like a curtain. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? QW: Autocad and Rhino. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? QW: A secondary sustainable translucent skin made out of metal mesh. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? QW: We worked with curtain wall consultant and lighting consultant. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? QW: The steel structure makes the feel of lightness possible. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? QW: We did research regarding the energy saving by the metal mesh as secondary skin. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? QW: The challenge is that the building will be converted into a kindergarten after the use as a sales office. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? QW: We want this unique project to be recognized and get more exposed. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? QW: We have learned a lot of knowledge about the metal mesh. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? QW: No, thanks.
