Interview with Sophia Georgopoulou at Monday 30th of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? SG: Given the brand name Basic Naturals, the design strategy was based on the vision and passion of the brand's founder, Yaniv Ben-David. The spark came from the inspiration he drew from Mother Nature, followed by his pledge to strictly stick to what Mother Nature only knows best. Basic Naturals products are made following best practices of aromatherapy as well as cold-infusion of flowers and herbs into the oils using only the finest ingredients. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? SG: Basic Naturals is a new series of 100% natural handmade skin care products. Crafted in small batches in Connecticut, USA, Basic Naturals use only the finest organic ingredients Nature has to offer and are created exclusively on the basis of time-proven, mild production techniques. I wanted to express the purity, the handmade element and the benefits of the brand. So in the design, the brand’s logo incorporates in the word ‘Basic’ the element of a flower pot in the shape of an inverted ‘A’ and a Calendula flower, constituting a wink to the first product created, based on this plant. The visual identity and label design of the brand had to respect its origins and sufficiently reflect the philosophy behind it. The primary colours are evidently earthly-ochre and black take center stage. The typography employed denotes a handwriting style, while still being clear, simple and very legible. Finally, the design of all individual products integrates an original illustration that relates directly to what the product is and does. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? SG: TO be able to help my client increase his sales and my work to be more recognised. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? SG: This project started in May 2016 and the first batch of products were finalised in March 2017. The project is still ongoing with new label designs for new products. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? SG: I was commissioned to design Basic Naturals natural handmade skin care products. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? SG: Organic skincare product lovers from all around the world. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? SG: Basic Naturals makes the best natural handmade skin care products. "Basic" means that the products are made with basic ingredients, simple formulas that work which only include the necessary key ingredients. "Naturals" means that only natural ingredients are being used and provided by mother nature (pure oils, organic flowers, beeswax and essential oils). FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? SG: my sketches and Adobe Illustrator. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? SG: Text editor: Konstantinos Kontinos and Photographer: George Pavlakos FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? SG: The main research regarding this project was the other organic & cosmetic brands mainly in the U.S. but also in the European Market. We tried to see the main visual codes of the market and the same time we tried to differentiate the brand Basic Naturals trying to express its values. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? SG: The hardest part of the journey was the physical distance, since we are based in Athens (Greece) and the Client is based in Connecticut U.S. But the most interesting part was that the whole collaboration took part through Skype.
