Interview with Sophia Georgopoulou at Monday 30th of April 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SG: The main inspiration for the design of Amphora Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic Games, ancient Olympia where olive trees were grown not only for their fruits but also to honour the triumphant athletes.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SG: I want to create a confident brand to express the its values, quality and clear message with a modern design and to be able to make it stand out from its competition.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SG: I hope my work will be more recognised and that this award will help my client increase his sales.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SG: The project started in May 2016 in Athens and finished in April 2017.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SG: I was given a clear brief from the client: The brand pays tribute to the history of the birthplace of the Olympic Games, ancient Olympia where olive trees were grown not only for their fruits but also to honour the triumphant athletes. Given the brand name we focused our design strategy in depicting the ancient practice of preserving olive oil in amphorae that led us to a very clear cut logotype.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SG: The brand was designed for my clients Amphora Olympia.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SG: My client :-)

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SG: no.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SG: Amphora Olympia is a series of premium quality Organic and Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Greece that is targeted for the foreign market, especially the Chinese Market.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SG: Amphora Olympia pays tribute to the history of the birthplace of the Olympic Games, ancient Olympia where olive trees were grown not only for their fruits but also to honour the triumphant athletes. The brand name was given to us from the Client. Amphora comes from the word "amphorae" that was the pot where Ancient Greeks were preserving the olive oil and Olympia comes from the birthplace of the Olympic Games (Ancient Olympia) were is the origin of the olive oil of the brand.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SG: Adobe Illustrator

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SG: The overall minimal and modern design highlights the premiumness of the quality of the product and places it in the upper class market segment of Extra Virgin Olive Oils.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SG: I work with Nikos Vlachogiannis for the texts and George Pavlakos for the photoshoot of the project.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
SG: Our main research was based on the existing Greek and International Olive Oil Brands and also on the history of Ancient Olympia and the Olympic Games.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SG: The hardest part of this design project was to differentiate a new olive oil brand out of the big Greek and International competition.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SG: A Design Awards is a well known design competition and I believed that entering the competition could give a chance to my client and my for better recognition of the product and the design work.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
SG: Regarding the logo of the brand, The circle in the middle of the logo symbolises the olive oil and ancient Olympia (letter O) and is placed at the center of an amphora shape which is inspired by the letter A of the word Amphora, and all together are concealed in a black circle. This idea helps the eyes of the beholder focus on the essential message: this is an olive oil of Greek origin and carries all the qualities of this heritage. The different colors depicted on the “O” showcase the varieties of the product.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
