Interview with ETHOSpace Pte Ltd at Tuesday 14th of August 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? EP: The brief was simple : To create a hotel that the Owner has always wanted. The design of Art Rotana emerged from a design vision inspired by the Owner encapsulating a perception of concept predicated on Heritage from eloquent expressions of the Past and Present “returning to the Future” within a modern context. Reflective of a Bahrain aspiring to create “Windows like eyes looking out into the world … through which the world is also looking back at,” the Art Rotana evolves around elements of design expressive of the Owners’ Vision to open up windows in our minds where we can see impressions of the past and visions of the future inspired by the desert elements of “water, sand and wind from a nature in praise of the raw beauty of the desert.” Within the context of a rich Arabian heritage and a contemporary landscape of ideals prevailing in the modern world that we live in today, in Art Rotana prevails a modernity that energetically embraces the lifestyle of the rich culture of a people who exudes finesse in the harshest of desert life by their warm approach in traditional hospitality to even strangers in their solitude from weariness after days or months from travelling alone in the desert : “Ahlan wa Sahlan” …… this warmth in hospitality still endearing over sands of time in context of how we look at the “poiesis of space,” forms within the Art Rotana were inspired from creative meditations over abstract compositions. For example, from our design exercises demanding “thoughts-before- and to-forms,” we may visualise in the creative processes the spirit of sky not necessarily as sunrise or sunset but flight where a cloud can be defined within our poetics as forms that represent “movement passing through clouds” or water expressed as ”the substance and surface of water” and “not just water as an object.” FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? EP: N/A
