Interview with Universidad EAFIT at Thursday 26th of October 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JG: Tango music, as famous as Buenos Aires, Argentina, FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JG: Harmonic integration between design and engineering, where the flow of character lines suggesting constant movement of a shape that develops with the eye, materializes in a unique product that delights and captivates FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JG: Be in touch with design and engineering FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JG: About two months FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JG: This design was a pursuit inspiration with a harmonic integration between design and engineering FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JG: My Company is a University, and so they have the production rights FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JG: In our form seeking journey, the exploration for Tango began by leveraging advanced computer aided design and surface modeling techniques, while honing in on the production approach with 3D printing experimentation. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JG: My partner JDR is a good a designer and very special person that help me to understand the whole word of design. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JG: The whole word FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JG: The inspiration of tango music to transform the shape. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JG: So, how to, symbolically, prolong that wonderful state of movement and vitality within the home? On the other hand, Tango music, as famous as Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a very fluid dance that brings life to any stage and hypnotizes the spectator. So, we decided to unite these concepts and give a shape to a vase with a dynamic visual state resulting in a seamless blend in which the flowers and the vase form a unity, an artistic unity with of sophisticated shape, texture and flow. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JG: Observation, detail with WACOM exploration and in special 3D software CAD (Computer Aided Design); and to see the form 3DP FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JG: All this, motivated by contemplating the presence of dance motion in countryside flower gardens. Here, we sought to raise the value of the indispensable inspirations of dance as expressions of movement, swirl of passions, spiral of harmonies and seduction, sophisticated costumes with skirt folds that travel in the air. This journey gave us the inspiration and shape for Tango Vase, leading to a production challenge that we took on to solve by leveraging the persistent shape and gloss of ceramic materials and adapting manufacturing processes suitable to materialize our idea and enable the expression of simple beauty, through the coherent manipulation of tools and materials. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JG: With Juan Diego Ramos.. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JG: Design is one of the fundamental human activities we undertake as a species. Many design definitions and characterizations are part of the activity, and talking about design without technology is to die trying. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JG: The truth of this design is born of an inspiration FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JG: Tango vase was born as an idea of encapsulating a form-giving experience reflected in two worlds: engineering and design. Engineering, with the process transformation capabilities leveraged by state of the art technologies FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JG: Only send the design without think about win. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JG: Most of us start the New Year hoping to be better versions of ourselves, and so new year with a good news. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? JG: Be open about what you need, and this A´Design Award & Competition is a good exercise to be in touch with design.
