Interview with Yao Wu at Wednesday 12th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
YW: There is a large area of desert in the north of China, many people lack of water, so it is very difficult for them to plant trees.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
YW: It is difficult to design a good work, especially the material problem. In our design, the focus of attention in the material. Obviously, we found it.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
YW: To raise enough money to support the design of a free or lower price for water and water.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
YW: Half a year

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
YW: In my opinion, designers should pay more attention to social and ecological protection and try to change it.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
YW: Yes, I'd like to sell this design and make it work.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
YW: I used to live in the north of China for a long time, probably more than 4 years, where people need better ecological environment, they lack of water, I want to help them solve the problem. This thing attracts me, it makes sense.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
YW: I am very grateful to my teacher, Professor Yang Junshun and Professor Chen Junzhi of Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, who has helped me a lot.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
YW: Maybe it's the government, or NGO, they're very concerned about this.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
YW: This design is a system, is a system, several links are indispensable, so it is very special, we think it is the most unique side.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
YW: Noah's Ark saved a lot of people and animals, and we hope that this design can protect more trees growing in the desert. So we call it "G ark"

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
YW: We think the rhino software is very good modeling, of course, we also do some manual in the laboratory.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
YW: The concept of time, we often say, time is life. For this design, I think so too.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
YW: My partner, Kong Guoqin, Jin Rong and Xiang Mengxun, have spent a lot of time on the design. I thank them very much.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
YW: I think it should be the use of degradable materials.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
YW: As of 2014, Chinese desertification land total area of 261 million 160 thousand square kilometers, accounting for land area accounts for 27.20%, located in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Shandong, Henan, Hainan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Xinjiang 18 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) 528 counties (banners, city and district). These are just Chinese data, I think I have enough reason to study design.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
YW: As I said, one is a matter of time, and the other is a structural problem.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
YW: A' design award is a very meaningful award, it is inclusive, very professional, I think this is the main reason

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
YW: For designers, the design process itself is a learning process, to do this design, we learned a lot of material knowledge. This is very interesting.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
YW: No, thank you

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
