Home > Winners > Design #55979 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Nils Fischer (NF) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Nils Fischer by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design NiceDice here.

Interview with Nils Fischer at Tuesday 7th of March 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
NF: I`m constantly bugged by all the different mounting standards, especially in the Film Industry. Every Brand make their own format, and as you can imaging, they are not made for working together.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
NF: Main Focus was the needs of the customers. So it had to be simple, durable and black. And I wanted something thats works without tools and can play nicely with products from other Brands...

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
NF: We will develop further Design ideas to make the life of filmmakers a little better. The NiceDice will be growing as a system with more functionalities.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
NF: around 1 year for the concept stage, a half year for technical detailing and maybe 6 month to find a propper production line to work with.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
NF: I was working as an Art director for a film company, many of my friends are working in this industry. My business-partner Andreas Albrecht is a known filmmaker. So it was easy to see the difficulties they had with their equipment.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
NF: The product is produced under our control and sold by us - but we are selling only to distributors, no end-customers.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
NF: as I said, working as an AD for a film company helped a lot ...

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
NF: Dieter Rams, Hermann Weizenegger,

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
NF: the semiprofessional and professional filmmaker, the VJ and the filming journalist

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
NF: The visual appearance is an direct outcome from the concept design, wich is a new approach. So I`m not sure it make sense to compare it to other designs - it would be just a sketchy guess...

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
NF: Nice Dice - we hope it is what it means (and it is kind of catchy)

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
NF: mostly digital modeling, but for sure also some classic tool for the first prototyps.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
NF: very important. Without modern technology like digital modeing or CNC milling this product would not exist. It just would not make sense to produce it cost-effective.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
NF: We where looking over the shoulders of a wide broad of people within the industrie to see how they deal with their difficulties.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
NF: Find a good production company

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
NF: I was invited.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
NF: Its hard to tell, I always work on several projects at once - so maybe they influence. But in general I try to be a student of every aspect of life – I thing that helps not repeating yourself in your work and gice you the chance to crossrefference solutions from one field to another.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
