Interview with Pearl Kraft & Katie McCann at Saturday 25th of March 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? PK: A cradle-to-cradle product that lessens household waste. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? PK: Creating a planter that recycles water and coffee grounds. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? PK: To further develop the product into a sustainable, marketable design solution. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? PK: The design process took one month. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? PK: Coffee is a highly effective natural plant fertilizer, but so much of it ends up in landfills. We designed a solution that uses this "waste product" to its full potential, while also minimizing waste. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? PK: We are producing the product ourselves. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? PK: We wanted to design a product to beautify the living environment while also helping reducing household waste. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? PK: n/a FS: Who is the target customer for his design? PK: Coffee drinkers, people who want to reduce their environmental impact from their homes. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? PK: It is a FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? PK: Decaffeinator is a product that reduces the amount of coffee grounds dumped into landfills, thereby "decaffeinating" them. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? PK: AutoCAD Rhinocerous Craftbot PLUS 3D Printer Formbot T-Rex+ 3D Printer FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? PK: The modular, layered design of this planter. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? PK: Naveed Khan and Jeremy Littler (digital fabrication lab technicians). FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? PK: We used technology in every stage of the design process, from 2D drawings, to 3D models, to 3D printing. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? PK: We conducted research to learn the effects of coffee on growing plants. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? PK: Our greatest challenge was working within the constraints of our 3D printers FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? PK: We are interested to see how our design fares in a global competition with a wide range of jurors. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? PK: We improved our understanding of 3D modelling and learned a lot about the 3D printing process. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? PK: n/a
