Interview with Atsuhito kitora at Monday 20th of February 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AK: When the leaves of the trees dye the mountains red and yellow, turning the mountains into a soft fluffy carpet, the trees grow and dream of glorious green new lives. Cradle of forest, a thin sheet of seeds is created, maintaining the warmth of the fallen leaves. Transformed into a postcard, to be sent to friends all over the world. Water it, and watch a new-born forest emerge. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AK: The warmth of the natural forest will become the medium of communication. Cradle of forest tells the world Preserving our of environment, Nurturing all living creatures is essential. Incorporating nature’s cycle into our daily lives, establishing a system gentle to the global environment is our goal. You can place this seed sheet anywhere and enjoy the touch of nature. From now on, we can relish the joys of nature in our daily lives. And give it back to the Earth when it grows up. This is a gift from the forest. Then, as the years go by, it will become a gift to the forest. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? AK: I love terms, “capacity to dream”. I think the difference between your recognized real situation and your envisioned future creates your capacity to dream. Anyone has various desires, but the dream cannot be realized just by having desires. The dream is not fantasy. The reality helps you to have a dream. When you focus on the future while certainly recognizing your real situation, having a dream becomes easier and the dream likely to be realized. I would like to contribute to the society by improving my capacity to dream while recognizing my real situation and focusing on the future in order to make a leap to my dream as well. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? AK: Many times. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? AK: The postcard made of forests seeds embodies the idea of absorbing the warmth of autumn leaves and the natural life. When water is added, you can it a way observe a new forest develop and wherever this card is placed, you can rejoice in a piece of nature and thus make it a part of your everyday life. When sending the postcard to friend, its essential message, which is the protection of our environment that is the basis of all life, can reach the most remote places in the world. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AK: Actually , this project will be remake it in holiday's season 2017 in Tokyo. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? AK: Rachel Louise Carson(Silent Spring) FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AK: General Consumers. And it is hoped that companies aiming to comply with Paris Agreement, a new international treaty aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, will actively use the cradle of forest. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? AK: None FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AK: Give it back to the Earth when it grows up. Thank you for sending me Cradle of forest. Lovely leaves sprouted up after simply watering the card. My grandchildren were so happy to come and see it. Now we were taking care of the plant together. It’s growing day by day just like our grandchildren, the young tree grows by watching the bog tree. I selected a flower version to reply. This is something new with an impressive feeling. Put it in your room and enjoy it. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? AK: Cradle of forest, a thin sheet of seeds is created, maintaining the warmth of the fallen leaves. Transformed into a postcard, to be sent to friends all over the world. Water it, and watch a new-born forest emerge. You can place this seed sheet anywhere and enjoy the touch of nature. Carry it around and put it down wherever you wont to. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? AK: A critic who is familiar with environmental issues. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? AK: Research to clear the problem of seed heat treatment. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? AK: Leaves that have fallen off the trees are made into powder, which is pressed together to make post cards. These cards need reinforcement to stay together. Splintered coniferous trees are broken down into fiber, and woven into nets to reinforce the cards. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? AK: I showed that anybody in other fields also can become competitive with world-class companies, if he or she has a strong will and intention to express his or her design. My desire to make our everyday life enjoyable and the functionality of my design were highly evaluated, resulting in winning the award. I have participated in competitions for overseas product design awards in order to find the way of thinking and the direction to be targeted, and applied feedback in practical business. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? AK: Cradle of forest can bring authentic nature instead of pseudo nature into our daily life, and it can be carried over into the future. This fantastic work is based on his hope which a desire to bring environmental issues closer to us, although we tend to view the issues on a global scale. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? AK: I believe that the brand is the foundation of business strategy instead of an added value or subsequently obtained status. Consistent strategy from branding to product development can survive in an intensifying competitive society. You consider the brand as an important element of management strategy and believe that the value revealed during a brand building process is important for illuminating your vision of management and narrowing down the direction of the brand. I think you want to build your brand into shining one and keep it shining more brightly by making the brand fuse with the business instead of making the brand into a special existence.
