Interview with Wenkai Xue at Thursday 27th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
WX: By considering of Mother Nature always using new lives to replace the old one, every new leaves can be seen a regeneration of those fallen leaves. Just like the saying that Mother Nature always know what is the best, fallen leaves are the best fertilizer of trees. In each autumn, fallen leaves are everywhere on the street, not be used. So we offer you Re-leaf, the design of ecological tree pool, the best solution of fallen leaves.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
WX: To offer a better solution of fallen leaves and give trees more fertilizer, we find a solution in the tree pools design. As we all know, the fallen leaves can be rotted by themselves and it is the best fertilizer of trees. We want to use semi-closed tree pool to effectively avoid water runoff and protect soil moisture. We put the fallen leaves in our tree pool, give it a space in rotting.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
WX: I focus on the environment system and use tree leaflets effectively to get a eco-friendly life.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
WX: The project started in April 2015 in LAFA Communal Facility Design Studio and finished in August 2016 in National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Industrial Design in LAFA.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
WX: As we all agree that Mother Nature know what is the best, fallen leaves are the best fertilizer of trees. But before those leaves rot for a while, they are accumulated, compacted and watered by rain and snow. Return to the Roots is the solution of fallen leaves.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
WX: Our product is not produced by any company. And we are always looking for partner.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
WX: By means of ingenious design of three-dimensional space, trees are spread fertilizer which is ret by their own fallen leaves in the enclosed space formed by the tree pool, so as to increase soil nutrients and stimulate tree growth.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
WX: No.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
WX: We design for the government and people who focus on environmental problems.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
WX: Our project is kind of model combination design, combine with 4 same parts. You can install all the parts before you set up the tree pool.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
WX: The product is a kind of tree pool which to keep the environment balance by use re-cycle leaflets. So we call it Re-leafs.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
WX: We used some PC software as assist to accomplish and present out design.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
WX: It breaks design concept of ordinary tree pool, to prevent the waste off leafs.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
WX: We have professional and technical person in our team.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
WX: Consist of 4 parts so we can install it effectively.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
WX: Yes. By some questionnaire survey, field research and interview with local people.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
WX: The challenge of our design is that we cannot find a suitable material in hardness and ductility. After a number of tests in the selection of materials, we finally find the proper material which achieves the desired effect.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
WX: International Award and Competition affirmation for us to make our design much more persuasive. What’s more, it is a pretty promotional platform for us to take part in this competition.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
WX: We learned how to express our design simply and straight, and focus on the detail. At the same time we learn how to cooperation.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
WX: I think that's all.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
