Home > Winners > Design #51196 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Maurice L. Dery (MD) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Maurice L. Dery by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Shroom here.

Interview with Maurice L. Dery at Tuesday 2nd of May 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MD: The Shroom light was inspired by the story of Alice in Wonderland. The idea of large mushroom shapes came into mind and so began the journey to design and create this light fixture.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MD: I wanted to create a unique lighting installation that was fitting for the Design Show.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MD: I plan to market this light fixture for sale.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MD: The entire design process took approximately 2 - 3 weeks.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MD: The design was commissioned for an exhibit space at the IDS Central Bar display for the September 2016 IDS exhibition.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MD: This lighting design is being produced by Karice Enterprises Ltd.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MD: The excitement of creating something new always inspires me.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MD: This lighting design can be applicable in any installation. Residential, or hospitality industry would work.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MD: The shape of the light is very unique.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MD: Shroom is a shortened version of the word "Mushroom". Shroom seemed to be a more interesting name than Mushroom.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MD: All of my design begins in my imagination. I can see the design before it is even created. The next step is to put the idea on paper. I used Auto Cad drafting as my main designing tool.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MD: Unique aspects of the light are its shape. The way the light is assembled is very unique. The design is unlike anything on the market.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MD: Both Maurice Laurent Dery and Jordan Nicolas Dery collaborated on this design

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MD: The light uses energy efficient Leds.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MD: How to illuminate the light? What lighting technology was to be used? How do we hold thirty aluminum gills together without compromising the aesthetic appeal of the light? These were some of the questions and challenges that occurred.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MD: During the process, new innovative ways were created for the assembly process of the light. This then led to new lighting designs that we have since created.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
