Interview with Lin shaobin at Wednesday 26th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? SL: This product is positioned as collective and commemorative products by Runyuanchang tea. We hope that the packaging design should have distinctive visual effect and traditional Chinese features to realize a sense of ritual when it is opened. Therefore, we think about that whether there is a similar reflective way in the traditional Chinese etiquette, which has different packaging from other teas. Finally we found inspiration in the ancient calligraphy and painting scroll. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? SL: Main work in this project for me is control and visual comb. Want to show the product itself has unique, collection and cultural sense. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? SL: Hope to do more better design works in future. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? SL: The design of this project, from the illustrations to the show of packaging, spent total six months time. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? SL: The design is entrusted. Client gives us a lot of confidence and space to design. We found the interesting of it and designed for it. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? SL: We are only responsible for the design work. Produced and sales for another company. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? SL: Because I like to drink tea. Also do a lot of design for tea brand before. And this client is a long-term relationship, so we took this project. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? SL: No. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? SL: Target group is collectors who prefer to keep and love tea and in favor of traditional Chinese culture at the same time. They are older and like design with traditional culture. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? SL: The difference is the open way and experience feeling. The traditional are directly open to get the tea. But we need people to unlock the rope knot, slowly expand the roll. Thereis formation of a traditional sense of ritual and get the tea. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? SL: Cloudy is the planting of the product, Yunnan tea. Another reason is the environment of mountains in Yunnan is 1700 meters above sea level, perennial clouds around. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? SL: Illustrations are hand-painted, and scan to the computer with PS trim, and the CDR for typesetting. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? SL: The most unique of my design is the combination of humorous and exaggerated creative performance into design what I need. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? SL: I responsible for the illustrations, packaging and layout design. The font design is design with colleagues together. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? SL: There are two technology for the packaging printing. Golden hot stamp and UV oil. Gives people the texture of water on some details. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? SL: This product is limited sale to customers who prefer to keep and love tea. We do the research for them, they are older and like design with traditional culture. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? SL: The preferred challenge is the content of illustrations. Not only show the contents of illustrations, but also with creativity. The second challenge is how to combine the concept of picture roll into a package. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? SL: After the final packaging design, we feel that there is no similar creative products, also with connotation of Chinese tea culture. It is the opportunities to promote own country local culture. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? SL: In the design process of this work, let me learned more of Chinese culture and tea culture. Also learned the packaging of the material and structure. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? SL: No.
