Interview with Jo Zhu at Wednesday 26th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? WZ: The main idea in the behind was to make a tearoom in the shape of a pavilion and this interior should have sufficient features to integrate with nature. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? WZ: The main focus of the work was to display tearoom furniture. The furniture came from our own brand Suyab Furniture that emphasis Oriental Aesthetic, Modern Household. The whole interior served the purpose to bring out the oriental sense with modern function and fashion feeling behind our furniture. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? WZ: Actually my primary focus after winning the A’ Design Award Competition will be promoting my furniture. Well, the winning of this interior can be a bonus for me to attract interior customers as I am still doing interior designs too. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? WZ: It took me about two months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? WZ: First of all it was for displaying my own furniture designs. I intend to make furniture that can integrated into interiors. This interior I design has features that can echo back to my furniture's characters. I do enjoy a working process that can bring both interior and furniture into harmonious integration. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? WZ: I think it is the modern way of demonstration on Chinese tea drinking space sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts. Also its pursue on bring natural scene and natural light into the interior is quite different from other interiors that separate themselves from the nature. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? WZ: At the beginning I used hand drawing to draw out the plan, later my employees worked out CAD version plan. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? WZ: It is a pavilion shape interior. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? WZ: During the building process I used some recycled woods. I assumed that these woods taken back from dismantled building would give the space a mark of human life. As these woods were old I had to treat with them carefully in regards to safety. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? WZ: I joint this prestigious international design competition with promotional concern. If I win I will receive great benefits. Also I want to join the competition as a test for myself to see how my design capability is comparing to other designers in the world.
