Interview with Denise Krack at Thursday 28th of April 2016 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? DK: surry bulga came to existence through the inspirational and cosmopolitan experience of life in the heart of Sydney. The name surry bulga was derived from the words Surry Hills (suburb of Sydney) and the aborigine word Bulga (hill). During the six years she spent studying and working in Australia, the creator, Denise, developed the idea to design and produce her own bags. The vision for the bags was simplicity and practicality. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? DK: A huge influence in the design of the bags was Denise’s easygoing and typical Australian lifestyle. And this is what the Can-Ga-Bags of surry bulga are all about - fun, freedom and spontaneity. You’re not only buying a practical and trendy bag but the epitome of portable Sydney lifestyle. Whether it’s a visit to the gym, to the sauna, to the pool or to the beach, the Can-Ga-Bags are perfect for any leisure activity. However, the bags from surry bulga don’t just suit leisure activities, they are also perfect for the occupational daily routine. So there is nothing in the way of having a relaxing lunch break in the park - there is even enough space in the bag for a laptop or tablet! Can-Ga-Bags are made from high quality materials and are the perfect accessory to every outfit. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? DK: To broaden up the brand itself and to place the brand bigger on the market! surry bulga came to excistence in Germany with lots of inspiration of Sydney Australia and we are aiming to get bigger in Europe then USA and of course in Australia. Furthermore, we would like to extend our online shop with many other amazing Australian lifestyle based products. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? DK: I started to bring something on paper that was in 2010... and to actually get started was 2014. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? DK: There is no other concept as mine that was also why I got a patent on it. I was always looking for a towel or for a bag and then I thought well there has to be a function to combine these two functions. And I think it's also very practical and it looks quite stylish. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? DK: I have the 100% rights of this product - as I said it's patent - German Patent number: 10 2013 110 264.6 FS: What made you design this particular type of work? DK: With our increasingly ‘on-the-go’ lifestyles, it’s important that we are being smarter with our purchases and that they complement our every-day lives. And Can-Ga-Bags do exactly that. Functionality paired with style and design, Can-Ga-Bags are the perfect companion for people who love to enjoy life. Not only are they high quality bags, they come complete with a hidden towel. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? DK: Nope. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? DK: Everyone vom 16-65 FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? DK: It has a 2 in 1 function in it! A huge influence in the design of the bags was her easygoing and typical Australian lifestyle. And this is what the Can-Ga-Bags from surry bulga are all about - fun, freedom and spontaneity. You’re not only getting a practical and trendy bag but the epitome of portable Sydney lifestyle. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? DK: surry bulga came to existence through the inspirational and cosmopolitan experience of life in the heart of Sydney. The name surry bulga was derived from the words Surry Hills (suburb of Sydney) and the aborigine word Bulga (hill). FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? DK: I'm a art director so therefore it wasn't a problem at all for me to design everything. I used the Adobe Creative Cloud Software. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? DK: That the bag transforms into a towel! FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? DK: Nope just me and then I showed it to a patent lawyer and he did the rest in applying for it. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? DK: The functional how to transform the bag into towel. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? DK: Nothing it was my own inspiration as I was always for a look to get a bag or a towel. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? DK: Nothing because I knew exactly what I want. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? DK: I got a letter from you guys, saying that my product is very innovative & interesting and I should apply for the competition, which I did! FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? DK: A lot of things if I would start now - you would read almost a book :) FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? DK: Fühl das Leben - be free is my slogan, so feel free to check out my online shop www.surrybulga.com
