Interview with Zera Shan Xuan Ng at Friday 22nd of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
ZN: The main inspiration behind this design is to allow plus size or women in maternity to dress beautifully. The airy material doesn't sits on body, it can cover unglamorous part of body and eye-catching floral print can instantly draw attention and catch distraction from people to ONLY see the print but the body.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
ZN: This is the first collection of my fashion brand. My main focus is to create a collection which stands out and also practical.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
ZN: I would like to distribute this design to department stores or independent boutiques.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
ZN: It took me approximately 6 months to design and finish this collection.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
ZN: We are produced this design by ourselves and already selling this design to independent boutique across South East Asia and The United Kingdom, and continue to reach out to more potential buyers.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
ZN: Our target customer for this design is tall and slightly plus size women, age between 21-30.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
ZN: The name "The Garden" came from an array of watercolour artwork with flower, leaves, and butterfly.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
ZN: We designed this in traditional way, using paper, marker pen, and textile design software.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
ZN: The original artwork prints. We are the only brand who uses this watercolour artwork.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
ZN: Collaborated with a fresh graduate, Janice Cheong from Raffles Design Institute Singapore and the watercolor artist.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
ZN: Digital Printing

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
ZN: N/A

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
ZN: We want to have exposure and get connected to creativity people and people in design industry. As fashion and art aren't a big thing for Malaysian. We believed, A'Design Award is a great platform for us in order to achieve our plan.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
ZN: This design is meant to "Stands Out" but it is lack of commercial awareness. For our new and ongoing design, it will be more towards commercial but cutting edge.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
